For centuries, it was used almost exclusively by the people of a mountainous region in southern China where the herb grows wild. <meta charset="utf-8">Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as we know it today originated in the center of the country,<meta charset="utf-8"> far from this region. For this reason, Jiaogulan is not included in the TCM standardized list of medicines and is therefore not used to the same extent as other Chinese medicinal herbs. <meta charset="utf-8">In the 1970s, China conducted a comprehensive census. It was discovered that residents of certain regions, mainly Guizhou province, were living longer than average - often more than 100 years. It turned out that the oldest residents had regularly drunk Jiaogulan tea throughout their lives. Partly from this incident comes the nickname "herb of immortality", but also from the numerous scientific studies that have been conducted on the mysterious herb. Modern recognition of Jiaogulan outside of China stems from research into sugar substitutes. When examining the sweetening agent in Jiaogulan, saponins were found that were identical to those found in <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/koreansk-ginseng-panax-ginseng" title="Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)" style="color: #4e991d;" target="_blank" data-mce-style="color: #4e991d;">Korean Ginseng ( Panax ginseng )</a> . Further research discovered several additional saponins that were comparable or identical to those found in P. ginseng. The saponins in P. ginseng are called ginsenosides, while those found in Jiaogulan are called gypenosides. Compared to Korean Ginseng, Jiaogulan has the advantage of being much easier to grow and ready to harvest much earlier. <meta charset="utf-8">Today, Jiaogulan is well used in China and widely consumed by those interested in its reputed rejuvenating properties. Culture: Jiaogulan has a wide range in nature: it stretches all the way from China to Korea and Japan, down to Southeast Asia and even to New Guinea. It is a plant that thrives in a variety of climates. It is a climber that can reach a height of 8 meters. You can either grow it against something it can wrap around, or let it creep along the ground in low-growing shrubs. Jiaogulan should be able to grow in the majority of Sweden's zones 1-2, it can handle temperatures down to -10°C. It prefers to grow in a loamy, well-drained but moisture-retaining soil (typical humus character) - potting soil works well. Place in a sunny location. Plant in a pot and overwinter in a greenhouse the first year to give the plant slightly milder conditions. You can also overwinter it in a storage room, basement, etc. if there is enough light. If the plant survives the first year with protected overwintering, you can try planting the plant out in the ground next spring to give it a try to overwinter without protection the coming winter. You can always set up windbreaks made of non-woven fabric and stakes around the plant and cover the base with straw to create milder conditions when growing directly in the open field. Alternatively, move the plant indoors during the winter and place it outside during the summer months. If your plant has grown properly after the summer, top it and make tea from the leaves to adapt it to its new indoor growing space. Already thousands of years ago, Carob - as the dried bean pods are called - were used as a counterweight when weighing gold and precious stones. The kernels (seeds) inside the pod always weighed 0.2 grams and that is where the measurement <meta charset="utf-8">carat comes from. Carob has also been used as a cough medicine and sold as candy in pharmacies in the past. The pods have a natural sugar content of 30-50% and this is believed to be one of the reasons why they were eaten as a snack in Ancient Rome. A known area of use today is as a substitute for cocoa, in roasted and ground form. Unlike cocoa, carob is free from i.a. caffeine and theobromine. Another common use today is the so called Locust Bean gum extracted from the seeds. Locust Bean gum is a thickener used in different foods, among others: ice cream and <meta charset="utf-8">crème fraîche. After picking, they are put in salt to release bitter compounds and to bring out the sourness. This is the kind of capers we often see canned in stores. You can also let the flowers remain on the plant until they eventually turn into fruits, the fruits can then similarly be put into salt to be made ready for consumption.  Preserving capers is very easy. It can be broken down into 4 steps: <ul> <li>Put the fresh flower buds/fruits in a bowl of salt</li> <li>Leave the buds/fruits in the bowl with salt for 3-7 days (or longer if desired).</li> <ul> <li>Drain the water that accumulates in the bowl and add some extra salt every day.</li> </ul> <li><meta charset="utf-8">When preservation is finished, rinse off the salt from the buds/fruits and soak them in water. Soaking time is up to your own taste, but recommended minimal time is 15 minutes. You can soak for several hours if desired. Grab a spoon and make a taste test every once in a while to find the flavor that suits you.</li> </ul> You can also pickle younger shoots and leaves from the Caper Bush. If you want to use slightly older leaves and shoots, a tip is to blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes before pickling. Mix your caper shoots & leaves with salt and vinegar, leave in the fridge for about 1 month. Ready to eat. Cultivation of capers has been traced back as far as 7,000 years ago in present-day Turkey, Jordan and Syria. There, it is believed to have been used for both culinary and medicinal applications. In medicinal use, all plant parts were used, most prominently as a digestive aid. A typical adaptation to a nutrient-poor environment is its very widespread root system, which makes it suitable as a soil binder in shorelines or eroding soils etc. In its natural environment, it is often growing on rocky cliffs and slopes. It grows on the walls of many ancient Mediterranean fortifications. The caper is an easily cultivated bush for home growers in the Mediterranean region (Spain, Italy, Greece, the coastal Balkan countries and south & west Turkey). <meta charset="utf-8">The Caper Bush develops an extensive root system, hence it grows best in deep, medium-textured, loamy soils. In temperate climate, capers are best grown in pots in bright locations and overwintered frost-free. Capers are characterized by an initial upright growth to later grow long horizontal lateral shoots that spread along the ground - or hang down along the wall that the plant has mounted. The bush is productive and in optimal conditions there can be good harvests of up to 3000 buds per bush and season. The Caper Bush can flower already in the first year sown from seed. Caper buds are usually picked in the morning since that is when they're believed to have their highest aromatic value. The Karen people have lived in the region for over 2000 years and were one of the first inhabitants of the area. Karenchilin is hardier than other tropical chilies. The chilies typically have a high heat and a distinctive fruity and sweet flavor that really makes its mark in the dishes it is used in. <meta charset="utf-8"> Karenchilin is easily recognized by its green, yellow, orange & red fruits with a slightly dented surface. Fruits in different stages are often visible on the plant at the same time a little into the season, hence the colorful impression of the plant. Another characteristic of Karenchilin is that its fruits usually always point upwards on the plant. <meta charset="utf-8"> The Scoville Heat Units (SHU) of the Karen Chili can vary depending on growing conditions, but it typically ranges between 50,000 and 100,000 SHU. This places the Karen Chili at a medium to hot level on the Scoville scale, a level that most other Thai Chili peppers fall into. Culture: <meta charset="utf-8"> Karen Chili can be grown both in pots and in the garden. It needs well-drained soil and a sunny location to thrive. It thrives in a warm and humid environment - both during germination and growth. This is a more low-growing licorice species.</li> </ul> Liquorice Root has a long history both as a medicinal plant and as a sweet treat. In Mongolia, the leaves are used as a substitute for common <a title="Tea (Camellia sinensis)" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/te-camellia-sinensis" target="_blank">Tea (Camellia sinensis)</a>. The root may also be ground/crushed to make your own licorice. Mix with sugar molasses/syrup, flour and anise in a heated saucepan.  Licorice root is also often used together with anise when flavoring alcoholic beverages. <h4 data-mce-fragment="1">Cultivation:</h4> Licorice root grows naturally in southern Europe and parts of Asia. The plant is hardy down to -25 ºC. In most of Europe, it can be grown outdoors all year round. To protect the plant during the winter, cover the base with twigs, leaves, straw or similar. Measures such as these can allow your Licorice root plant to thrive even in locations that are generally viewed as below its temperature range. The USDA Zone of the Licorice root range from 7-10. Licorice root may also be grown in a wide pot, put outdoors during the warmer months, and indoors during the colder months. Licorice root thrives best in well-drained soil and locations with full sun. The roots, which are the main part used for consumption, become meters long, so a large pot is recommended for pot cultivation. It takes about 3 years for the plant to become harvestable and by that time it will likely have grown to become a fairly large bush.  <h4 data-mce-fragment="1">Sowing:</h4> The seeds can be sown directly outdoors when the soil temperature has risen to above 15 <meta charset="utf-8">ºC. The seeds can also be pre-cultivated indoors any time of the year.
