Soapwort is a native useful plant that in traditional Sweden was often used both for washing textiles and for personal hygiene. Today it is used in acne treatments.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> The entire plant is useful, i.e. flowers, leaves, roots and stem. The soapwort contains fat-soluble substances that foam together with water. The highest concentration of the fat-soluble substances is found in the root. The foaming liquid can then be washed in, used as shampoo &amp; soap or as a general cleaning agent.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><meta charset="utf-8"> <span>Despite its toxicity, Saponaria officinalis is used in cooking. It acts as an emulsifier in commercial tahini production and helps create an airy foam in beer brewing. Originates from southwest China.</p> <p> Kryphallon is a very attractive ground cover precisely because it is low growing, effective in its ability to compete out weeds and is evergreen. This is the main purpose of the plant, but on top of that it also offers edible berries. This plant can become a favorite among those who are looking for effective and useful ground covers with the ambition to facilitate weed management, for example in a forest garden.</p> <p> A tight and<meta charset="utf-8"> Beautiful dark green foliage covering the creeping horizontal stems. White flowers in late spring-summer. The stems are covered with soft glandular hairs, not thorns.</p> <h4> <strong>Culture:</strong> </h4> <p> Thrives in semi-shady-shady locations, but also does well in direct sun. Thrives best in well-drained clay soils. However, it is tolerant of almost all types of soil: calcareous, sandy and acidic soils, for example. Hardy to about -15ºC.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8"> Ripe berries turn a deep red color in late summer-early fall. It is good to harvest regularly to allow the plant to produce new berries.</p> <p> Spreads via horizontal shoots that then take root. Once established, the Kryphallonet can spread 2 m per year. They thrive best in a light sandy soil rich in humus. To give the plant a humus-rich soil, you can mulch plant residues (e.g. grass clippings) into the top layer of soil or cover the soil with a layer of plant residues. The tree is characterized by its fluffy, light pink flowers that resemble a silky feather crown. Its beauty has made it a prized tree all over the world.</p> <p> The silk tree has also been used for its edible and medicinal properties for centuries. Young leaves are eaten as a vegetable - boiled or steamed. They are described as having an aromatic taste. Flowers are also cooked for consumption. A historically known kitchen plant in its native regions.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8"> The plant's bark, leaves, and flowers &amp; flower buds are used to make teas and extracts with reputed health benefits. Flowers are harvested when they open and the bark is harvested in spring or late summer to be dried for later consumption.</p> <p>Tea made from the flowers is said to have a delicate, sweet taste and relieve stress, tension and even minor depression. This is probably one of the reasons why the tree is also called "The Tree of Happiness". Please decide for yourself if this is true for you.</p> <p> You can also make jelly from newly bloomed flowers.</p> <p> In traditional Asian medicine, it has been used to calm nerves and as a mild sedative for sleep disorders.</p> <p> Flowers have been observed to be effective in attracting bees &amp; butterflies (as well as hummingbirds in America).<br><meta charset="utf-8"></p> <p> This tree, like other plants in the Fabaceae family, has a partnership with soil bacteria that bind nitrogen from the air and fix it to the tree's roots. In this way, the surrounding area is supplied with nitrogen that would otherwise be inaccessible to the vegetation - that is why we call plants that have such a partnership <em>Soil Improvers</em> .</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> The wood is also used to make furniture.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><strong data-mce-fragment="1">Culture:</strong></p> <p> The silk tree can be grown outdoors in the more favorable locations in Sweden (approximately from Uppsala and south according to growing zones).<meta charset="utf-8"> However, the tree should be hardy down to -25<meta charset="utf-8"> <span data-mce-fragment="1">°C, so geographical location is often ambiguous and success depends largely on the actual growing location.</span> <span data-mce-fragment="1">Thrives</span> best in warm and sunny places - a good location is in a wind-sheltered position against a south-facing wall.</p> <p> Young shoots can be sensitive to cold and frost. This variety spreads horizontally by means of underground (/under the water surface) rhizomes that are slightly thicker than the leaf stem itself.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> The other variety has a small gap in its leaf shape right where the petiole meets the leaf - this variety spreads by means of long, narrow above-ground stolons like strawberries. Judging by its similar growth habit, it is not difficult to understand that Gotu Kola is also a good ground cover.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Both variants contain the same active ingredients, but it is the latter variant that is most often used in the manufacture of dietary supplements, etc. As can be seen in the pictures, our plants belong to the latter variant.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> <strong data-mce-fragment="1">Culture:</strong></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> In its natural environment, Gotu Kola is often found growing in <span data-mce-fragment="1">water</span> , in damp soil, and along roadsides and hedgerows.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> It is an easy-to-grow and vigorous plant that thrives best in moisture-retaining soil in semi-shady locations. One advantage is to let it grow in airy soil with lots of organic matter as it requires moisture-retaining properties while excess water easily drains off/down into a basin.
