Grape vine: current height 150–175 cm

Common name: Grape vine
Scientific name: Vitis vinifera
Family: Vitaceae

Plant history & use

'Boskoop Glory' is a self-pollinating and relatively frost-hardy grape variety developed in the Netherlands and has become popular in northern Europe for its reliability and flavorful harvest. The grapes are blue to dark purple, with juicy flesh and clear sweetness – excellent for eating fresh, pressing into juice, or using in desserts. The variety is resistant to many common diseases and yields well even in greenhouses or against a sunny wall. Traditionally, grapes have been used as a source of energy, for digestion, and as generally strengthening berries.

Cultivation

Thrives in sunny and sheltered locations, preferably against a south-facing wall or in a greenhouse. Plant in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and prune annually to keep the vine productive and balanced. ’Boskoop Glory’ grows vigorously and needs a trellis or other support. Overwinters in the milder parts of the country, especially with protection around the base.

Characteristics

Perennial: Perennial
Growing site: Sun
Height: 2–5 meters (climbing)
Hardiness zone: 1–2
Harvest: August–October
Self-fertile: Yes

It produces sweet, yellow-green grapes with thin skin – excellent to eat fresh straight from the vine or to use for raisins, juice, and jam. The variety grows quickly, yields early harvests, and has good resistance to diseases. ’Himrod’ does not require a pollination partner and gives good harvest even as a single plant. Traditionally, grapes have also been used to support digestion and energy intake.

Cultivation

Thrives best in sunny, warm, and sheltered locations – preferably against a south-facing wall or in a greenhouse. Plant in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with good humus content. Prune annually to ensure good harvest and lasting shape. The vine needs a trellis or support to climb on.
Grape of the variety 'Rondo': current height 60-80 cm

Common name: Grape
Scientific name: Vitis vinifera × amurensis
Family: Vitaceae

Plant history & use

'Rondo' is a very frost-hardy grape variety developed to thrive in northern Europe's climate. It is the result of a cross between the European grapevine (Vitis vinifera) and the extremely hardy East Asian species Vitis amurensis. The variety was developed in the Czech Republic in the 1960s and has become popular for wine growing in colder climates, especially in Denmark, Germany, and Sweden. The grapes are small to medium-sized, blue-violet, and ripen early – often already in August–September in southern Sweden. They have a sweet and aromatic taste, perfect for both fresh consumption and the production of robust red wines with deep color and fruity character. The skins are thin and the grape has high color intensity, which makes it especially valued by winemakers.

Cultivation

'Rondo' is one of the hardiest varieties, able to withstand down to about -25°C. It thrives best in sunny and sheltered locations with well-drained, preferably lime-rich soil. The vines grow vigorously and need support in the form of trellis or pergola. Prune in early spring according to traditional trellis or guyot methods to promote fruit setting. For the best harvest, thin the clusters lightly during summer. Resistant to many common diseases. Avoid overly damp growing sites.

Characteristics

Perennial: Perennial
Growing site: Sunny and warm location
Height: 2–4 meters with support
Growing zone: 1–3

White Mulberry 'White Berry' tree - current height: 175-200 cm

[Picture of tree coming soon]

PICKUP ONLY

Common name: White mulberry, White mulberry tree
Scientific name: Morus alba
Family: Moraceae

Plant history & use:

The variety 'White Berry' is a type that reliably produces white berries. Mulberries are a genus that becomes more confusing the deeper you delve into the subject; there are a multitude of different species and varieties, and the plant’s range seems almost global—they thrive everywhere. In any case, the color of the berries is not always consistent even within the same species: far from all trees within the species Morus alba, also called White Mulberry, produce white berries. Most individuals within the species bear black berries, just like Morus nigra—it is rather the leaves and growth habit that mostly distinguish the species. M. nigra, however, cannot have white berries and always has black berries.

For the above reason, there is a need for named varieties with uniform traits. One of these is 'White Berry,' which only has white berries. They are not particularly easy to find—we will have 1 specimen for sale now in January 2025. The goal is to bring in more later in the spring.

General about Mulberries:

Mulberry trees are among the world’s oldest cultivated plants—probably best known for being the host of silkworms whose threads are made into silk fabric, since mulberry leaves are practically the only food source for silkworms.
Plant history & use:

Wasabi is Japan’s version of horseradish. However, the taste differs. The wasabi root (rhizome) is well known in grated form for Sushi, but can also be used to flavor ice cream and sweets.

If you want genuine wasabi in Sweden, it is best to grow it yourself. The ready-made wasabi paste you buy is often instead a mix of horseradish, mustard, and green coloring agents.

It is not only the rhizome that can be used, but also the leaves, which go well with shellfish, fish, and salads. The whole plant is edible.

Cultivation:

The wasabi plant is a perennial and withstands temperatures down to -10°C, so it can survive the winter in Sweden. Plants can be winter-covered with straw, dry leaves, spruce twigs, or similar to keep a higher temperature close to the plant as extra protection.

Wasabi thrives best by running water, so if you have a stream, river, or even a pond available, it provides good conditions for successful establishment. But it is also possible to grow it in fields; just make sure to keep the soil well-drained and moist. Wasabi grown in running water is called sawa in Japan, and field-grown is called oka.

Besides good water supply, the wasabi plant prefers to grow in a half-shady and cool place.

Optimal growth occurs during periods when the temperature is kept between 7-21°C.

The rhizome is harvested when it has grown thicker, which can take one to two years.

Characteristics

Lifespan: Perennial
Growing site: moist, half-shade
Height: 20-60 cm
Germination time: 5-20 days
Hardiness zone: Hardy down to -10°C (best growth 7-21°C)

The tree often grows in marshes, swamps and wetlands near rivers - especially along the Mississippi River and its surrounding regions. Water Tupelo has no problem growing in standing water. The tree usually forms a "swollen" base at the bottom of the tree trunk, then tapering upwards along the trunk. This classic "swamp tree look" somehow leaves a grand impression on the observer - perhaps the sheer size of the tree also plays a role. It is a sight to behold beyond the ordinary in our Nordic regions.

It still does not have an established Swedish name as it is a nearly non-existent plant in our regions, so we have chosen to let it keep its American name. The name Tupelo comes from a North American Indian language and is a combination of two words that mean "swamp/marsh" & "tree".

Forms edible dark purple fruits that ripen in autumn. The fruits can be eaten raw but are more often used to make jam. The fruits are about 4 cm long, have a sour pulp and a relatively large seed.

Water Tupelon, like the more familiar woodland Tupelon (Nyssa sylvatica), normally blooms in May, their inconspicuous flowers being very nectar-producing. Tupelo honey has a very rich flavor, and due to its high fructose content, it rarely crystallizes, making it one of the most popular North American honeys.

The small dark purple fruits also make the tree a popular food tree for birds. Interesting from an ecosystem perspective, if for some reason you need to attract birds to your forest garden or similar.

The wood from the roots is sometimes used to make floats instead of the more common wood from the Cork oak.
