Plant history & use
'Vitikiwi' is a modern and self-fertile variety of minikiwi originating from Central Europe. Unlike most other minikiwi varieties, this one does not require a separate male plant to bear fruit, making it ideal for smaller gardens or container growing – also as a pollinator for other female plants.
The variety is developed to yield abundant harvests – the berries are green, smooth, and fragrant fruits with an intense, sweet taste. The fruits of 'Vitikiwi' are small and elongated with a diameter of 2-3 cm and can be eaten with the skin on.
Harvest takes place in September–October and the berries are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber. Perfect as snacks straight from the bush, in salads, or for jam and juice.
Cultivation
Minikiwi thrives best in a sunny, sheltered spot and should be planted in humus-rich, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic reaction. Hardy like other minikiwi varieties – withstands temperatures down to about -25°C – allowing cultivation in large parts of the country. Since the plant grows climbing, it should be supported by a trellis or pergola. Water evenly during the season and avoid the roots drying out. Prune in late summer or early autumn to shape the plant and limit vigorous growth.
