The tayberry bush produces large, flavorful and juicy burgundy berries that are perfect for eating straight away - but also for making juice, jam and even wine. Another good way to use tayberries is to bake a tayberry pie. Like other hybrids, Tayberry also shows good resistance to plant diseases. Culture: Preferably grow in well-drained, humus-rich soil in a warm, sunny location. Does not do well in heavy clay soils, dry, sandy soils or waterlogged areas. The tayberry bush has inherited its long and slender branches from the blackberry and therefore works excellently to be grown climbing in a pergola, against a wall or similar. In spring, it produces numerous bright white flowers that light up shaded areas in the garden. At the end of summer, the tree forms peculiar pink-red edible fruits of 2-3 cm in diameter. These fruits can be used to make jam or bake a pie. In Asia, you make juice from the berries as well as ferment them into wine. The bark on thicker stems flakes and creates a beautiful pattern of varied colors. The leaves on the tree also turn into a beautiful bright red/orange color in autumn. <h4 data-mce-fragment="1">Cultivation:</h4> Dogwood is a deciduous tree that grows well in all of Europe. The tree is relatively long-lived (50-150 years) and is very cold resistant. Unlike many plants, dogwood thrives well in shaded locations. It should also preferably be protected from the wind. If the tree is in direct sun, the tree tends to produce increased amounts of fruit, but of a smaller size. An optimal growing spot for the dogwood is under one or several tall deciduous trees - which provide shade and add organic matter to the soil - surrounded by additional vegetation in different (agroforestry) layers. This contributes to creating a moist, wind-sheltered and semi-shaded environment in which the dogwood thrives best. The tree's luminous flowers can also light up an otherwise shaded "grove". The dogwood has low maintenance requirements and produces large recurring harvests every year. For the reasons mentioned above, the dogwood is an excellent tree to have in a woodland garden / food forest. If you don't have such conditions on your cultivation area, a location with morning sun and afternoon shade also works well for creating a similar environment.   <h4 data-mce-fragment="1">Sowing:</h4> The dogwood seeds are relatively slow-germinated. The seeds germinate best if given a cold period of 3-4 months. But first, the seeds should be soaked in warm water for 1-2 days. After soaking, mix the seeds with a handful of sand/peat/sowing soil and put in a plastic bag in the fridge for the above period. Check periodically if any seeds have germinated in the bag (if that's the case, sow them already). When the cold period is finished, carefully spread the contents of the bag on top of soil in a pot. With this method, germination can take a couple of months. Alternatively, sow outdoors in autumn and protect the seed from birds or other animals that might disturb the seed. An unusual<meta charset="utf-8"> Deciduous citrus variety with three-fingered leaves and slightly downy fruits. Originates from northern China. Easiest to use in everyday life by squeezing juice from the fruits - and possibly mixing with water to make a refreshing drink that should be very tasty. Tip : peel the fruits and boil in water together with <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/en/collections/plantor/products/sweetleaf%C2%AE-hallon-30-50-cm-rubus-chingii-var-suavissimus" title="'Sweetleaf®' / Sweetleaf 30-50 cm (Rubus chingii var. suavissimus)">'Sweetleaf'</a> leaves to remove the bitterness but at the same time not lose the rich flavor of the peel, and add a little sweetness to the drink. You can also make jams and jellies from the fruits - their rich pectin content makes this a suitable use. The taste should be somewhere between a lime and a grapefruit. Freshly harvested fruits do not contain much juice, but if you let them sit for about 2 weeks after harvest, the juice content increases to about 20%. Fruits are rich in vitamin C. The fruit peel is used as a seasoning, dried or fresh. The whole fruit can also be sliced into pieces and dried for use as a seasoning. Younger leaves are edible. In addition to contributing hardiness in breeding programs, Lemonthorn can be used to transfer, among other things: good disease resistance, tolerance to more nutrient-poor soils and low-growing characteristics. Tolerant of many different types of soil. However, Lemon Thorn thrives best in well-drained, nutritious, moist and slightly sandy soil. Place in sun to partial shade. Before that, the fruit is very tough and unpalatable - a bit like unripe fruit of the related Kaki ( Diospyrus kaki ), which, however, does not stay tough for quite as long. Interestingly, the fruit can develop this sought-after flavor prematurely if the fruit is exposed to a frost. The fruit can be dried like dates. When the fruit is dried, the roughness disappears and the flavor develops into something similar to dates. The fruit is considered to be antipyretic and the seeds are considered to be sedative in Chinese medicine (Chopra. RN, Nayar. SL & Chopra. IC). The fruit contains approximately 1.9% protein, 0.2% fat, 47.7% carbohydrate, 1% various minerals. The wood is durable, flexible and resistant to rot. Soapwort is a native useful plant that in traditional Sweden was often used both for washing textiles and for personal hygiene. Today it is used in acne treatments. The entire plant is useful, i.e. flowers, leaves, roots and stem. The soapwort contains fat-soluble substances that foam together with water. The highest concentration of the fat-soluble substances is found in the root. The foaming liquid can then be washed in, used as shampoo & soap or as a general cleaning agent. <meta charset="utf-8"> Despite its toxicity, Saponaria officinalis is used in cooking. It acts as an emulsifier in commercial tahini production and helps create an airy foam in beer brewing. In the Middle East, the root is used as an additive in the manufacture of halva to stabilize the oils and give halva its unique texture.<meta charset="utf-8"> characterized by. The flowers smell sweet in the evenings and are diligent when it comes to attracting pollinators. This dwarf, compact variety only reaches a height of around 1.5 m (compared to regular mulberries which can grow up to 6-8 m tall), making it suitable for any garden. Unlike other varieties that only produce fruit during a 3-week period towards the end of summer, Mojo Berry® produces berries over a very long period, from May right through to September. The fruits are great for using in jam, cake or other dishes. Mojo Berry® is beautiful as a solitary tree in a pot on the terrace/patio<meta charset="utf-8"> or in a pot with co-planting together with other plants and is also nice as a hedge plant/border. General information about Mulberry: Mulberry trees are one of our oldest cultivated plants. The black mulberry tree, like the white variety, <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/vitt-mullbar-morus-alba" title="White mulberry (Morus alba)" target="_blank">Morus alba</a> , originates from West Asia - however, the black mulberry tree came to Europe a couple of hundred years before the white one. The first findings of knowledge about the black mulberry tree were already around 300 BC. It may be that Morus nigra originates somewhat further to the southwest (closer to Europe) in West Asia than its relative Morus alba, and that this is why Morus nigra also has a slightly worse hardiness in cold climates than its relative. Traditionally, the black mulberry was used to make wine and cosmetics - thanks to its high concentration of anthocyanins which give the berry its deep dark colour. However, the berries were also grown for fresh consumption. Unlike the white mulberry tree, which can vary in color, the black mulberry tree's fruits are always black when ripe. The black mulberry is also more acidic. The berries are rich in antioxidants and, like mulberry leaf tea, are thought to help balance blood sugar levels. This is thanks to content of the substance MFE which stabilizes blood sugar levels and thus suppresses the body's cravings for sweets. Therefore, mulberries are a common substitute for those who want to get rid of their cravings for sweets. Common Name : Five-leaf Akebia, Chocolate Vine Scientific name : Akebia quinata Family : Lardizabalaceae Plant history & use : The Five-leaf Akebian originates from Japan, China and Korea where it is often found<meta charset="utf-8"> naturally growing<meta charset="utf-8"> on mountain slopes and on hills against hedges, tree trunks, along forest edges and watercourses. The highlight of this akebia is its oblong, edible, purple fruits that form inside pods that open up on their own when ripe. The seeds are surrounded by a juicy flesh that is sweet to the taste - it is said to be reminiscent of the flesh of dragon fruit. In Japan, it is eaten mainly as a seasonal delicacy. The fruit is sometimes eaten with lemon to enhance the taste. The shell of the pod is used in cooking, where it is filled with minced meat and then fried. The seeds are bitter and should not be chewed, however, they can be swallowed whole or simply spit out to avoid the bitter taste. The fruits can be made into jam, jelly, juice or smoothies and even ice cream can be made from the pulp. Young shoots can be added to salads. Leaves can be dried and made into tea. Often used as a ground cover plant: along walls, fences, fields and other less attractive surfaces. Akebian is also often used as a soil binder on slopes to prevent erosion. The Five-Leaf Akebian gives the garden an oriental look. <meta charset="utf-8">The flowers are said to have scents ranging from vanilla to honey and chocolate. The flowers are visually clearly divided into male and female flowers. <a title="Bioconverted Fruit Extract of Akebia Quinata Exhibits Anti-Obesity Effects in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Rats" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9656223/" target="_blank">Studies</a> have shown that consuming Akebia quinata reduces fat accumulation in the body and lowers blood cholesterol levels, and thus may be effective in combating obesity. This is a relatively new finding (2022) and theories are being floated that this fruit could become more well-known in the near future. The same study has also shown that A. quinata has a cleansing effect on the liver, kidneys and cardiovascular system. Regular consumption could have led to improved health. A. quinata is diuretic. <meta charset="utf-8"><meta charset="utf-8"> When consumed, the plant is also said to be an inhibitor against bacterial and fungal infections. The roots act as a fever reducer. In traditional Chinese medicine, akebian is used to treat urinary tract infections, insufficient lactation, and rheumatoid arthritis. The vines are also used to weave baskets. An oil is extracted from the seeds and is used in traditional Chinese soap making. Cultivation : Grows best in a sunny location, although tolerant of shady locations. Prefers slightly sandier soils with good drainage and good moisture retention properties. A humus-rich, slightly sandy soil is best - such as potting soil mixed with sand. Can grow in soils with both higher and lower pH values. Likes regular watering. However, it is relatively resistant to drought. Also very cold-resistant - can withstand lower temperatures between -20ºC and<meta charset="utf-8"> -30ºC. Generally fast growing. Can be pruned in early spring if necessary. Akebia are not self-pollinating, which means that all plants in the genus need another individual that is genetically different to be successfully pollinated and produce fruit - it doesn't have to be a different species/variety, just a different individual. Seeds from unusual and ancient cultivated plants are found here. Many of the plants have long been used by man for their useful properties - it may be about edibles as well as medicinal and household properties.

All seed varieties in the store contribute to a functional addition to the cultivation. Our seeds consist of open-pollinated and hand-pollinated heirloom varieties, we believe that a genetic diversity in the garden contributes to a healthier ecosystem that extends beyond the borders of our cultivations.
