This unique plant has electric and numbing properties. Gourmet chefs worldwide crumble a few of the flower’s stamens into food to give the guest a unique sensation. It begins with a faint electric “touch” that turns into a gentle numbing feeling. The sensation can be likened to that caused by Sichuan pepper. Therefore, the flower buds are sometimes called “Sichuan buttons.”
Fresh leaves are used both today and historically to relieve toothache by chewing them. This is thanks to the leaves’ numbing and antibacterial properties. Chewing the leaves also gives a refreshing feeling and counteracts dry mouth.
Historically, the leaves have been chewed to ease throat and gum infections.
Thanks to parakrasse’s muscle-relaxing properties, the plant is also used in natural wrinkle remedies and is sometimes called “nature’s botox.”
The entire plant is edible.
The flower buds can be used as a topping in everything from drinks to pasta and fish dishes – creativity sets the limits. The leaves are used in salads and stews.
Parakrasse is effective at attracting pollinators.
Cultivation:
In nature, parakrasse grows in somewhat warmer climates, often in moist soils. However, the plant tolerates periods of drought.
In Sweden, it grows best in pots, either indoors or outdoors. Overwinter frost-free. Place in sun or partial shade.
Thrives best in well-drained, humus-rich soil. Potting soil works excellently.
Grows quickly into a sprawling bush. When sown in March, the plant blooms already by the end of June.
