Japanese Raisin Tree (Hovenia dulcis)

~~50 SEK~~ 25 SEK

SEEDS (20pcs/bag) Common names: Japanese Raisin Tree, Oriental Raisin Tree, Raisin Tree, Chi-Chao Li Scientific name: Hovenia dulcis Family: Rhamnaceae Plant history & use: The Japanese Raisin Tree is a hardy tree found in Asia, from eastern China and Korea to the Himalayas where it grows at altitudes up to 2,000 m above sea level. The fleshy, sweet and fragrant fruits are eaten raw or cooked. When dried, they take on a taste and appearance reminiscent of raisins. An extract made from seeds, branches and young leaves can be eaten like honey and is also used to make wine and candy (Facciola, S.). The seeds contain about 15% protein and 7.8% fat (Duke. JA & Ayensu. ES). The raisin tree has long been used in traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese medicines to treat a variety of ailments, including hangovers (Hyun TK et al.). The fruits of the raisin tree are already mentioned in materia medica from the Tang Dynasty in the 7th century. Modern research confirms that the flavanonol ampelopsin/dihydromyricetin (DHM), found in plants in the genera Ampelopsis and Cercidiphyllum , can reduce symptoms of alcohol intoxication and withdrawal (Reich L.). Extracts of Hovenia dulcis are commercially available and marketed as a remedy for the after-effects of excessive alcohol consumption. The tree is traditionally known for its health benefits when consumed in tea form. The wood from the Raisin Tree is hard and well suited for making furniture. Culture: Thrives well in well-drained, sandy clay soils in a sunny and warm location. It is best protected from frost in the first few years, after which the tree can withstand temperatures down to -15°C. However, if the tree is allowed to harden off slowly to the cold, the tissue can be allowed to mature (harden) and then the tree can be hardy down to -25°C (Huxley. A.). Avoid compact and wet soils. The tree is considered fast-growing and usually does not grow more than 5-6 meters tall in our climate. In other parts of the world it reaches heights of up to 30 meters. Can be topped to keep as a bush or allowed to grow to become more naturally tree-shaped. The raisin tree is drought tolerant, but the quality of the fruit can be significantly affected if the water supply is not good. Watering 2-3 times a week is recommended during spring and summer. The fruits usually ripen late in the season, around October. The fruits are harvested when they have dried on the tree, so there is no need for manual drying of the fruits. The raisin tree is self-fertile and produces abundant fruit at maturity. Sowing: NOTE: These seeds have been stratified (cold period) and can therefore be sown immediately after receipt. Sow the seeds in moist soil. Cover with a thin layer (about 1 cm) of soil. Keep the seeds moist. For some seeds, germination can occur as late as a year later, i.e. another cold period later. Features: Year: Perennial Growing position: sun / light shade Height: 4-30 m Germination time: 1-12 months Growing zone: 1-4

White Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa)

~~45 SEK~~ 23 SEK

SEEDS (10pcs/bag) Common names: White Roselle, White Rosell hibiscus, White Sorrel Scientific name: Hibiscus sabdariffa Family: Malvaceae Plant history & use: Unlike the more commonly known red roselle hibiscus, the white roselle hibiscus has<meta charset="utf-8"> green-white sepals (what is normally referred to as the "fruit" of roselle hibiscus) more deep yellow flowers and green stem. The fruits are also smaller with white roselle, but the total yield is higher than from regular red roselle. The fruits and leaves are used in the same way as fruit and leaves from ordinary roselle - however, the juice becomes transparent / amber colored instead of the deep red color of ordinary roselle. Hibiscus sabdariffa originated in Africa and spread from there to Asia and the Caribbean. Most popularly used to make juice (Agua de Jamaica) from the fresh sepals, but you can also let them dry to make hibiscus tea. <meta charset="utf-8">Dried sepals are also used as a flavoring agent for Gin. The fresh leaves can also be used as a sour addition in salads or in soups of an Asian character. In Asia, the leaves are usually fried, made into soup or used for prepared dishes with e.g. fish, chicken and beef. Roselle is also often used for its health-enhancing properties. Culture: Roselle thrives in bright locations. Grow indoors in a bright window and feel free to move outside in the summers. Alternatively, sow the seeds directly in open ground when the risk of frost is over. Roselle is grown commercially in one-year periods. In nature, however, the plant is perennial and it can also become so when grown at home. Wintering in a bright location is a prerequisite for perennials in Sweden. Grows into a small tree / tall shrub. Sowing: Soak the seeds 1 day in advance. Sow in moist soil and preferably cover with plastic with small holes in it to retain moisture. Optimum temperature for rapid germination is between 25-30 ºC , but the seeds germinate even at 20+ ºC . If necessary, use a heating mat for better germination conditions. Characteristics: Age: Perennial Plant position: sun Height: up to 2 meters Germination time: 7-30 days

Common Comfrey (Symphytum officinale)

~~40 SEK~~ 20 SEK

SEEDS (10 pcs/bag) Common name: True Comfrey Scientific name: Symphytum officinale Family: Boraginaceae Plant history & use: True Comfrey has historically been a well-used plant in the treatment of various ailments. But above all, it is a very effective accumulator of nutrients, meaning a good soil improver. Comfrey grows quickly and its roots are deep-reaching, giving the plant access to nutrients from deeper soil layers that are otherwise inaccessible to most plants. It is mainly minerals such as potassium and calcium that are stored in the leaves, but also magnesium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, and others. The leaves of comfrey can be cut down during the year and used as mulch, or alternatively dug into the soil, to make the nutrients available to other plants. Comfrey leaves are well suited as fertilizer for fruit trees and berry bushes thanks to their content of potassium and phosphorus. Comfrey has a long growing season, from early winter to late autumn. If the leaves are not cut down before winter, they wither and similarly provide a nutrient boost to the soil they grow on. New leaves begin to grow on the plant immediately after the snow melts. You can also make your own liquid fertilizer from comfrey by filling a container with the leaves and then filling it with water to the brim. Let it stand for a couple of days and then mix the fertilizer water with 10 parts water to water the plants with. Effective as an edge plant by manure heaps to prevent nutrient leakage, but also as an edge plant around crops and other places where you do not want weeds to spread. Comfrey’s dense root system acts like an underground wall, making it difficult for other roots to penetrate. Comfrey creates an attractive environment for other plants in the cultivation – whether it is to attract pollinators or to serve as a natural fertilizer. Cultivation: Comfrey is a herbaceous perennial. It thus remains in place even after the leaves have withered during winter. It is an incredibly easy-care plant and tolerant in choice of growing place. It can grow in shade as well as wet ground and is therefore an effective component in flooded and waterlogged soils. It also thrives well in drier soils in sunny places, although it prefers a somewhat moist environment. Sowing: Sow indoors or outdoors. If germination has not occurred after one month when sown indoors, place the sowing in the fridge for a month and then bring it back to room temperature, or alternatively place it outside during spring and summer. Can also be sown outdoors in autumn to give the seeds a “real winter.” The seeds then germinate in spring. Characteristics: Lifespan: Perennial Growing position: shade/partial shade/sun Height: 50-100 cm Germination time: 1-12 months Hardiness zone: 1-6

Red Shiso / Spearmint (Perilla frutescens var. crispa)

~~40 SEK~~ 20 SEK

SEEDS (30pcs/bag) Common Names : Red Shiso, Leaf Mint, Chinese Mint, Veripeippi, Sesame Sauvage, Schwarznessel, Wilder Sesam, Beefsteak Plant, Shiso Zoku, Bai Su Zi Scientific name : Perilla frutescens var. crispa Family : Lamiaceae Plant history & use : Shiso, or Spearmint as the herb is called in Swedish, originates from the Far East: Korea, Japan, China, etc. Its natural habitat is from the Himalayas to eastern Asia where it often grows wild in moist, open woodland. Both seeds, leaves and young shoots/plants are used as a spice. The taste may be considered unfamiliar to Western palates at first, some people detect cinnamon, others coriander or citrus. Shoots or young plants are added to salads, while older leaves are often used as a garnish or seasoning. However, the uses of Shiso are wide-ranging. Larger leaves can be used to wrap bulgogi , a Korean beef dish. Leaves from purple-colored Shiso varieties are used in Japan to color and flavor pickles: e.g. ginger and plum. Older leaves can also be salted and used to flavor tofu and as a garnish for tempura . Since the leaves have a "curry-like" flavor, they are an ingredient in many soups and stews. It is also common to make dishes with steamed Shiso leaves, e.g. Perilla Leaf Kimchi . The leaves can also be dried for later use. Unopened flower buds are used as a garnish for soups and other dishes, eaten fresh in salads, pickled (like <a rel="noopener" style="color: #4e991d;" title="Caper seeds (Capparis spinosa)" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/kapris-capparis-spinosa" target="_blank">capers</a> ) or stir-fried with other vegetables . The seeds can be sprinkled over salads and dishes. They are one of the ingredients in the well-known spice mixtures 'Shichimi' and 'Seven Spice'. Energy bars are also made with Shiso seeds. It is the seeds from the purple-colored Shiso varieties that are preferred for culinary use. U From the seeds, you can also extract so-called perilla oil , which is used in industrial contexts - for example, in perfumery and dental care products, as well as in the paper and paint industries. However, the oil is also used for culinary purposes as a flavoring for sweets and various sauces. From the seeds, you can also extract an oil that is effectively used to treat wood, similar to linseed oil. The seeds contain approximately 21.5% protein, 43.4% fat, 11.3% carbohydrate, 4.4% minerals of various kinds. The seeds of Shison are also rich in linolenic acid (ALA). Shiso is a valued medicinal plant in oriental medicine, where it is described as a pungent, aromatic and warming herb. Both the leaves, stems and seeds are used . The leaves are used in the treatment of colds, respiratory infections, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc. (Yeung. Him-Che.). The seeds are antiasthmatic, cough suppressant, emollient and expectorant. The juice from the leaves is applied to cuts and wounds (Manandhar. NP). Extracts from the plant are used internally in the treatment of asthma, colds and chills, nausea, abdominal pain, food poisoning and allergic reactions (especially those from shellfish), bronchitis and constipation (Duke. JA and Ayensu. ES). The stems are a traditional Chinese remedy for morning sickness (Bown. D.). Extracts of the herb have recently begun to be used in the Western world, against certain allergies and as an alternative to antibiotics and cortisone. In the last 20 years or so, there has been interest in the herb's effect on asthma (Almark L. & Flising L. - Swedish Herbal Society). Cultivation : Does best in a light, moisture-retaining soil in a sunny location. Shison is not frost-resistant so it needs to be overwintered frost-free if you want to grow it as a perennial. Otherwise, it is suitable for growing as an annual due to its high growth rate. Easy to grow, like most other plants in the Lamiaceae family: <a style="color: #4e991d;" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/search?q=Lamiaceae" title="Search results for Lamiaceae - Garden day" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Greek Mountain Tea, Holy Basil, Tree Basil, Thai Basil, Lemon Basil</a> . <a rel="noopener" title="Growing zones - Swedish zones & USDA zones in Sweden and the rest of the world" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/pages/vaxtzoner-svenska-usda-europa" target="_blank">USDA zone</a> is stated to be 7-10. The approximate translation from USDA zone 7-8 to our Swedish system is growing zone 1-2. However, since the systems are not measured in the same way, they are not directly translatable. Experiments can be done at your own risk, there is a chance that the roots of the plants can overwinter in the mildest parts of the country, even if the above-ground part freezes during the winter. Sowing : Pre-cultivate indoors, or sow outdoors in late spring when the soil is warm. The seeds are light-germinating - therefore cover the seeds with an extremely thin layer of soil or do not cover at all. Keep the seeds moist.<meta charset="utf-8"> One way to maintain good humidity is to cover the seed with plastic with air holes. Optimal germination temperature is 18-25 °C. Features : Annuality: Perennial in warmer climates, otherwise annual Growing position: sun Height: 60-100 cm Germination time: 5-15 days <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/pages/vaxtzoner-svenska-usda-europa" title="Growing zones - Swedish zones & USDA zones in Sweden and the rest of the world" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/pages/vaxtzoner-svenska-usda-europa" target="_blank" data-mce-fragment="1">USDA zone</a> : 7-10

Common Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis)

~~35 SEK~~ 18 SEK

SEEDS (50 pcs/bag) Common names: Soapwort, Soaproot, Soap herb Scientific name: Saponaria officinalis Family: Caryophyllaceae Plant history & use: Soapwort is used, as the name suggests, as soap, shampoo, and detergent. Soapwort is a native useful plant that in traditional Sweden was often used both for washing textiles and personal hygiene. Today it is used in treatments against acne. The whole plant is useful, that is, flowers, leaves, roots, and stem. Soapwort contains fat-dissolving substances that foam together with water. The highest concentration of these fat-dissolving substances is found in the root. The foaming liquid can then be used for washing, as shampoo & soap, or as a general cleaning agent. <meta charset="utf-8">Despite its toxicity, Saponaria officinalis is used in cooking. It acts as an emulsifier in commercial tahini production and helps create a light foam in beer brewing. In the Middle East, the root is used as an additive in making halvah to stabilize the oils and give the unique texture that halvah is known for.<meta charset="utf-8"> The flowers smell sweet in the evenings and are diligent in attracting pollinators. Cultivation: Since Soapwort is adapted to the Swedish climate, it is not difficult to grow it outdoors here. It thrives in most soils, with slightly clayey soils being best. Sun/partial shade are good locations. It grows 30-100 cm tall depending on the growing site. Soapwort can spread extensively through underground runners. So choose carefully where you plant it. Preferably fenced and alone if you do not want it to take over the cultivation. Sowing: Sow directly at the growing site or start indoors. 1 cm deep. Keep the sowing moist when growing indoors. If germination does not occur within a month, place the sowing in the fridge for about a month. Alternatively, sow outdoors in pots or in the ground from September to November. The seeds will germinate the following spring. Characteristics: Lifespan: Perennial Growing site: sun/partial shade Height: 30-100 cm Germination time: 1-3 months Growing zone: 1-5

Light-Purple Butterfly Pea Double-Flowered (Clitoria ternatea)

~~50 SEK~~ 25 SEK

SEEDS (10 pcs/bag) Common names: Light purple Butterfly Pea, Light purple Sail Pea, Light purple <meta charset="utf-8">Klitoria, Light purple Butterfly Pea Scientific name: Clitoria <meta charset="utf-8">ternatea Family: Fabaceae Plant history & use: Magenta-colored variant of the more common <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/bla-himmelsart-clitoria-ternatea" title="Blue Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea)" style="color: #4e991d;" target="_blank">Blue Butterfly Pea</a>. Large climbing plant with edible flowers. Can be grown as a cover crop against fences or as ground cover. Used to color food, sweets, and drinks. In Asia, tea is made directly from the flowers. Sometimes it is mixed with lemongrass, honey, and lime. Butterfly Pea is also used in traditional medicine as a relaxant and memory enhancer. As a comparison, one can think that tea made from Butterfly Pea is used in Asia in the same way we use chamomile tea in Sweden. Like <a title="Winged Bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus)" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/goabona-vingbona-psophocarpus-tetragonolobus" style="color: #4e991d;" target="_blank">Winged Bean</a> Butterfly Pea is regenerative for the soil as it fixes nitrogen from air pockets in the soil and also works well as ground cover. However, Butterfly Pea is generally not hardy in Sweden, unlike the Winged Bean. Cultivation: Butterfly Pea is a sun-loving, fast-growing plant that quickly establishes itself if it has something to climb on. Growing in pots is recommended if you want it to be perennial in Sweden. Overwinter frost-free. Can grow in both moist and dry soils. Thrives surprisingly well in heavy clay soils. For pot cultivation, a humus-rich soil with good drainage should be used. Pinch branches for a bushier growth habit. Sowing: Start indoors early in the year, or sow outdoors in April-May. Soak the seeds for 1 day in advance. Sow in moist soil and preferably cover with plastic with small air holes to maintain good moisture. <meta charset="utf-8">Seeds from Butterfly Pea often germinate irregularly; one seed can sometimes sprout a whole month earlier than another seed in the same sowing. If you want more control over the whole process, Butterfly Pea seeds are easy to germinate on a piece of moist paper. Place the paper in, for example, a food container with the lid slightly ajar – keep moist. Now you can easily see when each seed starts to sprout and gradually pick out seed by seed and sow in a small pot with soil. Characteristics: Life span: Perennial Light: sun Height: 150-300 cm Germination time: 10-20 days

Jiaogulan Plant 20-40 cm (Gynostemma pentaphyllum)

~~265 SEK~~ 133 SEK

Jiaogulan: current height 20-40 cm Common names: Jiaogulan, Gynnostemma, <meta charset="utf-8">Sweet Tea Vine, Southern Ginseng, Miracle Plant, Amachazuru Scientific name: Gynostemma pentaphyllum Family: Cucurbitaceae Plant history & use: Jiaogulan, also called "the herb of immortality," is one of the lesser-known traditional Chinese herbs. For centuries it was used almost exclusively by the people in a mountainous region in southern China where the herb grows wild. <meta charset="utf-8">Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as we know it today originated in the central part of the country, <meta charset="utf-8">far from this region. For this reason, Jiaogulan is not included in the standardized listings of medicines in TCM and is therefore not used as widely as other Chinese medicinal herbs. <meta charset="utf-8">In the 1970s, China conducted a thorough census. It was then discovered that the inhabitants of certain regions, mainly Guizhou province, lived longer than average—often more than 100 years. It turned out that the oldest residents had regularly drunk Jiaogulan tea throughout their lives. Partly from this event comes the nickname "the herb of immortality," but also from numerous scientific studies conducted on the mysterious herb. Modern recognition of Jiaogulan outside China stems from research into sugar substitutes. When examining the sweetening substance in Jiaogulan, saponins were found that are identical to the saponins found in <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/koreansk-ginseng-panax-ginseng" title="Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)" style="color: #4e991d;" target="_blank">Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)</a>. Further research discovered several additional saponins which were comparable or identical to those found in P. ginseng. The saponins in P. ginseng are called ginsenosides while those found in Jiaogulan are called gypenosides. Compared to Korean Ginseng, Jiaogulan has the advantage of being much easier to cultivate and is ready for harvest much earlier. <meta charset="utf-8">Today Jiaogulan is well used in China and is widely consumed by those interested in its reputed rejuvenating properties. The leaves taste sweet and are used to make tea. They can also be cooked—for example, in a wok. The herb is today used in the treatment of diabetes and a range of other ailments. There is much to read about this herb for the interested. Cultivation: Jiaogulan naturally has a widespread range: it stretches all the way from China to Korea and Japan, down to Southeast Asia and even to New Guinea. It is a plant that thrives in a variety of climates. It is a climbing plant that can reach up to 8 meters high. You can either grow it against something it can twine around, or let it creep along low-growing bushes on the ground. Jiaogulan should be able to grow in most of Sweden’s zones 1-2, roughly tolerating temperatures down to -10°C. It prefers to grow in a humus-rich, well-drained but moisture-retaining soil (typical humus character)—potting soil works well. Place it in a sunny spot. Plant in a pot and overwinter in a greenhouse the first year to give the plant somewhat milder conditions. You can also overwinter it in a storage room, cellar, etc., if there is enough light. If the plant survives the first year with protected overwintering, you can try planting it out in the ground the next spring to give it a chance to overwinter without protection the coming winter. You can always set up wind protection made of fleece and stakes around the plant and cover the base with straw to create milder conditions when growing directly outdoors. Alternatively, move the plant indoors during winter and place it outside during the summer months. If your plant has grown well after the summer, prune and make tea from the leaves to adapt it to its new indoor growing space. With this method, it is possible to grow Jiaogulan throughout Sweden. Suitable to grow as ground cover in favorable climates. Characteristics: Lifespan: Perennial Growing position: sun Height: up to 8 meters Growing zone: 1-2

SEEDS (10 pcs/bag) Common names: Chinese Licorice Root, <meta charset="utf-8">Gan Cao, <meta charset="utf-8">Manchurian Licorice, Mongolian Licorice Scientific name: Glycyrrhiza uralensis (syn. G. glandulifera) Family: Fabaceae Growth history & use: <meta charset="utf-8">Characteristic of Chinese Licorice Root is: <ul> <li> <meta charset="utf-8">Originally from Central Asia and northern China.</li> <li>Used in traditional Chinese medicine for its healing properties.</li> <li>Hardy down to -25 ºC.</li> <li>Can be grown outdoors in colder climates with suitable winter protection.</li> <li>Grows to a height of 0.5-1.5 meters. This is a more low-growing licorice species.</li> </ul> Licorice root has a long history both as a medicinal plant and as a sweet treat. Already in 4000 BC it was used by the Assyrians and since then licorice root has been used for, among other things, calming nerves, relieving colds, and fighting other viral infections. Licorice root was sold at pharmacies as medicine as late as the 1970s. <meta charset="utf-8">One of the most prominent uses of licorice root by our ancestors was chewing the root to keep teeth clean and healthy. This was done because the <meta charset="utf-8">substance glycyrrhizin found in the roots has antibacterial properties. It is also the substance that gives the sweet taste. Glycyrrhizin is not metabolized in our bodies and can therefore, just like <a style="color: #4e991d;" title="Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana)" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/stevia-sotflockel-stevia-rebaudiana" target="_blank">Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana)</a>, be used as a blood sugar-friendly substitute for sugar. The root can be shredded and made into tea. You can also make a refreshing drink served with ice. <meta charset="utf-8">In Mongolia, the leaves of licorice root are used as a substitute for regular <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/te-camellia-sinensis" title="Tea (Camellia sinensis)" target="_blank">Tea (Camellia sinensis)</a>. The root can also be ground/crushed to boil your own licorice. Mix with sugar/syrup, flour, and anise in a pot and bring to a boil. Licorice root is also often used together with anise to flavor alcoholic beverages. Cultivation: Licorice root grows naturally in southern Europe and parts of Asia. Chinese Licorice Root is hardy down to -25 ºC. In most parts of Sweden it can be grown outdoors year-round. To protect the plant during winter, cover the base with twigs, leaves, straw, or similar. By winter covering your plant, it is possible to create a place where it thrives even if your growing region lies outside its stated growing zone. <meta charset="utf-8">Licorice root can also be grown in a wide pot, placed outdoors during the warmer months and indoors during the colder months. In Sweden it can be grown both in pots and in open ground but in the latter case must be winter covered with e.g. twigs, leaves, or straw. The roots, which are the part used for consumption, grow to meter lengths so a large pot is recommended for pot cultivation. It takes about 3 years for licorice root to be ready for harvest and during that time it grows into a fairly large bush. Licorice root thrives best in well-drained soil and locations with full sun. Sowing: The seeds can be sown outdoors <meta charset="utf-8">directly in open ground when the soil temperature is above 15 ºC. You can also start seedlings indoors throughout the year. Place in a bright window. <meta charset="utf-8">Soak the seeds for 1 day before sowing. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and keep the sowing moist. Carob / Locust Bean (Ceratonia siliqua)

~~40 SEK~~ 20 SEK

SEEDS (15 pcs/bag) Common names: Carob, also called St. John's bread Scientific name: Ceratonia siliqua Family: Fabaceae Growth history & uses: Carob is an evergreen cultivated plant with a long history of various uses. Thousands of years ago, Carob – as the dried bean pods are called – was used as a counterweight when weighing gold and gemstones. The seeds inside the pod always weighed 0.2 grams, and this is where the measure carat comes from. Carob has also been used as a medicine for coughs and was sold as candy in pharmacies in the past. The pods have a natural sugar content of 30-50%, which is believed to be one of the reasons they were eaten as snacks in the Roman Empire. A well-known use today is as a substitute for cocoa, in roasted and ground form. Unlike cocoa, carob is free from caffeine and theobromine, among other things. Another common use today is the so-called locust bean gum extracted from the seeds. <meta charset="utf-8"> Locust bean gum is a thickening agent used in various foods, including ice cream and crème fraîche. Carob contains many different vitamins, e.g. vitamin A and B2, and has a flavor reminiscent of caramel. The Carob tree fixes nitrogen absorbed from air pores in the soil via nodules on the roots. This nitrogen is used for the tree's own growth and consequently enriches the rest of the growing site. Cultivation: <p data-mce-fragment="1" style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px; margin: 0cm 0cm 15.0pt 0cm;">In its natural environment around the Mediterranean, the tree grows 10–15 meters tall and produces pods up to 25 cm long. In Sweden, it is best grown in a pot that is moved outdoors during the summer and overwintered in a cool place. Since the tree can tolerate temperatures down to about -8 ºC before it is damaged, it is theoretically possible to keep it as an outdoor tree in favorable locations in Sweden. But this is an experiment in itself and is recommended to be tested once the tree has grown somewhat. Otherwise, Carob is drought-tolerant and thrives in well-drained/rocky soil in sunny locations. Avoid moist environments and heavy clay soils. Water when the soil has dried out and add nutrients during the summer months if desired. Repotting into a larger pot is preferably done before the taproot (the thickest main root) has grown down to the bottom. As with all plants, limited space for taproot growth equals a significant decrease in the growth of the entire plant. Carob trees growing in their natural environment around the Mediterranean are high-yielding trees that can produce up to 400 kg of bean pods each year. Sowing: Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 3 days before sowing. Sow in seed soil. Cover with 2 cm of soil. Keep the sowing moist. Germination time is about 2-5 weeks and the optimal germination temperature is 22-26 ºC. Features: Perennial: Perennial Growing conditions: sun Height: up to 15 m Germination time: 2-5 weeks

Dwarf Mulberry Mojo Berry® 'Matsunaga' 40-50 cm (Morus rotundiloba)

~~465 SEK~~ 233 SEK

Dwarf Mulberry Mojo Berry® 'Matsunaga': current height 40-50 cm Common name: Dwarf Mulberry, Mojo Berry® Scientific name: Morus rotundiloba Family: Moraceae <h4>Plant history & use:</h4> Mojo Berry® is a short-statured mulberry variety that bears fruit on both old and new branches, which means you can pick mulberries during the first year, unlike the usual 5 or 6 years it takes for most other mulberries. This dwarf, compact variety only reaches a height of about 1.5 m (compared to common mulberries that can grow up to 6-8 m tall), making it suitable for all gardens. Unlike other varieties that only produce fruit during a 3-week period at the end of summer, Mojo Berry® produces berries over a very long period, from May all the way to September. The fruits are excellent for making jam, cake, or other dishes. Mojo Berry® is beautiful as a solitary tree in a pot on the terrace/patio or in a pot with companion planting alongside other plants and is also nice as a hedge plant/boundary. General about Mulberries: Mulberry trees are among our oldest cultivated plants. The black mulberry tree, like the white variety, <a rel="noopener noreferrer" title="White mulberry (Morus alba)" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/vitt-mullbar-morus-alba" target="_blank">Morus alba</a>, originates from West Asia - however, the black mulberry tree came to Europe a few hundred years before the white one. The earliest known finds of the black mulberry tree date back to around 300 BC. It is possible that Morus nigra originates somewhat further southwest (closer to Europe) in West Asia than its relative Morus alba, which may explain why Morus nigra has slightly less hardiness in cold climates than its relative. Traditionally, the black mulberry was used to make wine and cosmetics - thanks to its high concentration of anthocyanins which give the berry its deep dark color. But the berries were also grown for fresh consumption. Unlike the white mulberry tree’s fruits which can vary in color, the black mulberry tree’s fruits are always black when ripe. The black mulberry is also more tart. The berries are rich in antioxidants and are believed, like tea made from mulberry leaves, to help balance blood sugar levels. This is due to the content of the substance MFE which stabilizes blood sugar levels and thus reduces the body's craving for sweets. Therefore, mulberries are a common substitute for those who want to overcome sweet cravings. Because of the berries’ unusually high nutritional content, mulberries, like <a rel="noopener noreferrer" title="Goji (Lycium barbarum)" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/collections/froavdelning/products/gojibar-bocktorne-lycium-barbarum" target="_blank">goji berry</a>, are considered a so-called "superfood". Besides mulberry wine, one can also make juice and jam from the berries. From the leaves, one can brew healthy tea which has historically been drunk in China and has recently started to become popular again in Asia. <h4>Cultivation:</h4> Mojo Berry® is hardy down to -10°C = outdoor cultivation zones 1-2. If the tree is winter-covered with sheep’s wool or similar, it can survive outdoors up to zone 5. Alternatively, grow in a pot and place in a greenhouse/storage over winter. The tree can grow in most soils but thrives best in loose, nutrient-rich soils. It is hardy in windy coastal climates but optimal growth is given in warm, sheltered locations. Suitable as a trellis tree since the branches are easily bendable. Mulberry trees also fit well in forest gardens as they are a popular host plant among many organisms and provide recurring harvests without much care while protecting plants in the lower layers. Mulberries are self-fertile, meaning only one tree is needed to bear fruit. Prune in winter when the tree is dormant to avoid excessive "bleeding," which is otherwise a common trait among mulberry plants. The berries ripen continuously from May to September. The berries are harvested when the color changes from red to coal black. A tip is to pick the berries with a needle to avoid crushing them between the fingers. <h4>Characteristics:</h4> Longevity: Perennial Growing position: sun Height: around 150 cm Growing zone: 1-2 outdoors, 1-5 with winter cover or in greenhouse

Cornelian cherry dogwood 40-80 cm (Cornus mas)

~~325 SEK~~ 163 SEK

Cornelian cherry dogwood: current height 40-80 cm Common name: Cornelian cherry dogwood, Cornelian Cherry Scientific name: Cornus mas Family: Cornaceae Plant history & use: We like to refer to the Cornelian cherry dogwood as Europe’s (yellow-flowered) counterpart to Sakura – the Japanese cherry trees, which also bloom on bare branches. Like the cherry trees, the Cornelian cherry dogwood also produces interesting, edible berries that can be used in many ways. The natural range of the Cornelian cherry dogwood stretches from central and southeastern Europe to western Asia around the Caucasus, but it has also been successfully planted in, among other places, Sweden and North America. The Cornelian cherry dogwood is usually valued for its ornamental qualities early in the year. With its abundant flowering on bare branches in March-April, it is a refreshing sight before much else has sprouted. Because of this, it also serves as a valuable early source of nectar and pollen for pollinators. The flowers are small and yellow and grow in clusters. From the flowers come then olive-shaped red berries that are edible. These ripen late in summer or early autumn. The fruit is hard, sour, and astringent before it is ripe but softens as it becomes sweeter. Another sign that the fruit is ripe is to look at the ground – when the fruit starts to fall, it has sweetened. For easier harvest, you can shake the branches and then pick up the berries that fall, since not all ripen at the same time. The berries, described as tasting like cranberry/sour cherry/plum, can be used to make jelly, jam, juice, fruit wine, and as cocktail berries. The stones can be roasted, ground, and then used as a coffee substitute, and unripe fruits can be pickled and eaten as a substitute for olives. The Cornelian cherry dogwood has long been used in Mediterranean countries and western Asia precisely for its fruits and the medicinal properties they are believed to have. The berries contain a high amount of vitamin C and the antioxidant anthocyanin, which gives the fruit its color. The Cornelian cherry dogwood is self-pollinating but the harvest can be more abundant if several individuals are planted together. The hard wood of the Cornelian cherry dogwood was highly valued by the ancient Romans and Greeks for making, among other things, spears and bows. Cultivation: The Cornelian cherry dogwood thrives best in full sun to partial shade but also does well in shadier places, though it will produce fewer berries there. If allowed to grow freely, it becomes a broad and bushy shrub. It is also excellent to train it into a small tree, and the crown can become as wide as the tree is tall. When growing freely, it becomes multi-stemmed, but it is equally possible to keep and train one of the stems. The Cornelian cherry dogwood can also be used as a hedge plant as it responds well to pruning. It has an upright growth habit, but if the branches grow long, their tips may start to point downward. The Cornelian cherry dogwood prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and is not picky about pH, although calcareous soil is especially favorable. It is warmth-loving and tolerates drought once established. The stem is gray-brown and the bark on somewhat older individuals flakes nicely. The Cornelian cherry dogwood is deciduous and its autumn color is a beautiful brownish-yellow to reddish-brown. Characteristics: Longevity: Perennial Growing position: sun/partial shade Height: 3-6 m Hardiness zone: 1-4

Tip: grate the peel of the fruits and boil in water together with <a title="'Sweetleaf®' / Sweetleaf 30-50 cm (Rubus chingii var. suavissimus)" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/en/collections/plantor/products/sweetleaf%C2%AE-hallon-30-50-cm-rubus-chingii-var-suavissimus">'Sweetleaf'</a> leaves to remove the bitterness but still keep the rich flavor of the peel, and add a little sweetness to the drink. You can also cook marmalade and jelly from the fruits – their rich pectin content makes this a suitable use. The taste is said to be somewhere between a lime and a grapefruit. Freshly harvested fruits do not contain much juice, but if left about 2 weeks after harvest, the juice content rises to about 20%. Fruits are rich in vitamin C. Fruit peel is used as flavoring, dried or fresh. The whole fruit can also be sliced and dried to use as seasoning. Younger leaves are edible. Thorns and bark have historically been used to relieve toothache (Duke. J. A. and Ayensu. E. S.). Bark from the trunk is used against stomach ailments such as bloating, etc. A tree/shrub can produce up to 14 kg of fruit. The whole plant, but especially the flowers, are very aromatic. Blooms fragrantly in April-May. Beautiful foliage in autumn. Strikingly beautiful in winter with its yellow fruits on bare branches. Used as rootstock for other citrus species – adds an extra 3ºC in hardiness to the grafted plant (Natural Food Institute). Lemon thorn hybridizes readily with other citrus species, making it a good breeding parent if you intend to develop new hardy citrus varieties. Citrange is, for example, a type of hardy orange developed by crossing Lemon thorn with a "regular" orange. Besides contributing hardiness in breeding programs, Lemon thorn can be used to transfer, among other things: good disease resistance, tolerance to poorer soils, and low-growing traits. The sharp thorns and bushy growth habit make it very suitable as a boundary hedge. <div class="page" title="Page 2"> <div class="section"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <h4> Cultivation: </h4> Easy to grow. Plants have been reported to withstand short periods of temperatures down to -30ºC without damage. Lemon thorn often has a lifespan of about 25 years. Relatively short-lived, with the advantage that it starts producing fruit earlier than other varieties and produces abundant fertile seeds to raise the next generation of plants in time. Begins to bear fruit during its 3rd to 5th year. <h4>Characteristics:</h4> Perennial Light: sun/partial shade Height: 2-5 meters Growing zone: 1-2, up to zone 5 in greenhouse </div> </div> </div> </div> </div>

The highlight of this akebia is its elongated edible, purple fruits that form inside pods which open by themselves when the fruit is ripe. The seeds are surrounded by juicy fruit flesh that is sweet in taste – it is said to resemble the flesh of the dragon fruit. In Japan, it is mainly eaten as a seasonal delicacy. The fruit is sometimes eaten together with lemon to enhance the flavor. The pod’s skin is used in cooking where it is, among other things, filled with minced meat and then fried. The seeds are bitter and should not be chewed, but can be swallowed whole or simply spat out to avoid the bitter taste. The fruits can be made into jam, jelly, juice or smoothies, and even ice cream can be made from the fruit flesh. Young shoots can be added to salads. Leaves can be dried and made into tea. Often used as a ground cover: both along walls, fences, fields and other less attractive areas. Akebia is also often used as a ground binder on slopes to prevent erosion. The Five-leaf Akebia gives the garden an oriental appearance. <meta charset="utf-8">The flowers are said to smell of everything from vanilla to honey and chocolate. The flowers are visually clearly divided into male and female flowers. There have been <a title="Bioconverted Fruit Extract of Akebia Quinata Exhibits Anti-Obesity Effects in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Rats" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9656223/" target="_blank">studies</a> showing that consumption of Akebia quinata reduces fat accumulation in the body and lowers cholesterol levels in the blood, and thus can be effective in combating obesity. This is a relatively new finding (2022) and theories that this fruit may become more well-known in the near future are expressed. The same study has also shown that A. quinata appears cleansing for the liver, kidneys, and the heart and vascular system. Regular consumption could lead to improved health. A. quinata is diuretic. <meta charset="utf-8"><meta charset="utf-8">When consuming the plant, it is also said to inhibit bacterial and fungal infections. The roots act as a fever reducer. In traditional Chinese medicine, akebia is used to treat urinary tract infections, insufficient milk production, and rheumatoid arthritis. The vines are also used for weaving baskets. Oil is extracted from the seeds which is used in traditional Chinese soap making. Cultivation: Prefers a sunny spot, although it is hardy in shady locations. Prefers somewhat sandy soils with good drainage and good moisture retention. A humus-rich, light sandy soil is best – like potting soil mixed with sand. Can grow in soils with both higher and lower pH values. Likes regular watering. However, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Also very frost-hardy – can withstand lower temperatures between -20ºC and <meta charset="utf-8">-30ºC. Generally fast-growing. Can be pruned in early spring if needed. Akebias are not self-pollinating, which means that all plants in the genus need another individual that is genetically different to be successfully pollinated and produce fruit – it does not have to be another species/variety, just another individual. Characteristics: Lifespan: Perennial Growing position: sun / partial shade Height: up to 4 m Hardiness zone: 1-3

Guava 'Ki Nok' (Psidium guajava)

SEEDS (20 pcs/bag) <div class="page" title="Page 2" data-mce-fragment="1"> <div class="section" data-mce-fragment="1"> <div class="layoutArea" data-mce-fragment="1"> <div class="column" data-mce-fragment="1"> Common name: Guava, Guajava, Guayava, Yellow Guava Scientific name: Psidium guajava Family: Myrtle family Plant history & use: <meta charset="utf-8">Guava is a tropical fruit tree originally from Central and South America. The 'Ki Nok' variety is one that has arisen in Southeast Asia with abundant production of smaller fruits, about 6-7 cm in diameter. The fruit's outer skin changes from green to yellow when ripe, as does the flesh. The fruits can also be eaten when green and then have a crisper texture – in Asia, the green fruits are sliced into wedges and dipped in a mixture of sugar, salt, and chili – surprisingly tasty. The fascinating thing about the guava fruit is that it has two different "layers" with different flavors. The outer layer (including the skin and about a centimeter inside) tastes slightly "piney," while the innermost layer tastes tropical and sweet. The flavor can be described as a mix between pear, mango & strawberry for those who have not tasted guava before. The outer layer, including the taste, decreases in thickness as the fruit ripens. The tree can grow up to 10 meters tall. Guava is a rich source of vitamin C and other antioxidants. The fruits are usually eaten fresh or used to make juice, jam, and jelly. A gray-black dye is extracted from the leaves, which is used for natural dyeing of, among other things, silk. The bark of a guava tree has a smooth, spotted appearance, where parts of the bark peel off at different times and places. This creates a beautiful pattern and contributes to a highly decorative look in cultivation. <meta charset="utf-8">Another beautiful feature of the guava tree is its flowers, which are large, white, and fragrant. These flowers attract both insects and birds, which can help bring life to the garden. <div title="Page 2" class="page" data-mce-fragment="1"> <div class="section" data-mce-fragment="1"> <div class="layoutArea" data-mce-fragment="1"> <div class="column" data-mce-fragment="1"> Cultivation: Guava is a hardy and easy-to-grow plant that can be cultivated in a wide range of soils. However, it prefers well-drained, sandy soil with a pH level between 6 and 7. Guava thrives best in a warm climate with high temperatures and high humidity but can also tolerate lower temperatures down to the frost limit. Growing in a greenhouse is therefore preferable, or alternatively frost-free overwintering. The plant location is important for guava; the tree thrives best in full sun or partial shade. But it is important to ensure the tree does not get too much direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, as this can cause damage to leaves and fruit. Guava is a drought-tolerant plant and can withstand long periods without water. But for the best fruit production, the soil should be kept moist and fertilized regularly with a balanced fertilizer. It is also important to prune the tree regularly to control its size and to promote fruit production. The harvest period varies depending on the growing conditions, but guava trees are usually ready for harvest 2-3 years after planting. However, it can take up to five years for some trees to start producing fruit. The fruit-bearing period is between June and October. Sowing: Guava seeds are best started in pots. </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="column" data-mce-fragment="1"> Place the seeds on moist sowing soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil moist and place the pot in a warm, sunny spot. Cover the pot with a plastic bag or a glass dome to create a mini-greenhouse. Germination usually takes between two to six weeks. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots or into the ground in a greenhouse. It is important to ensure the seedlings do not dry out during the first growth period, but at the same time avoid overwatering as this can cause rot and kill the seedlings. The guava tree is known to be a hardy plant, but it is important to care well for the sowing to achieve effective germination.
