Plant history & use
’Conference’ is one of Europe’s most cultivated pear varieties, known for its reliability, large sweet fruits, and good storage ability. The variety was developed in England at the end of the 1800s and is today a classic both in professional cultivation and home gardens.
The fruit is long and slender with greenish-yellow skin, juicy flesh, and a mild, sweet taste – good to eat as is or use in baking, salads, and pickling. The pears can be stored cool for several weeks after harvest. The tree blooms abundantly and attracts pollinators, and its beautiful growth habit makes it a fine feature even in larger gardens.
Cultivation
Thrives in sunny and warm locations with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Plant with plenty of space – these specimens are grown outdoors and have well-developed trunks with good growth. Self-fertile variety that yields well alone, but even more abundantly if placed near another pear variety. Water regularly during establishment and prune annually as needed for shape and fruit wood.
