SEEDS (20 pcs/bag)

Common name: Okra
Scientific name: Abelmoschus esculentus
Family: Malvaceae

Plant history & use:

Okra is a plant with many uses and its fruits are among the most popular tropical vegetables worldwide.

The fruits are a well-used ingredient in cooking thanks to their crisp texture and thickening properties. The fruit contains binding substances which make it very suitable for stews and soups. It can also be eaten raw; for example, in Asian cuisine it is often served alongside the main dish with accompanying sauce.

The leaves can, like spinach, be used raw in salads or tossed into a stir-fry. The leaves also have a mild binding effect.

Roasted okra seeds can also be used as a caffeine-free alternative to coffee.

In West Africa, where okra is widely cultivated, the flower buds and open flowers are also eaten.

The average nutritional value of okra is higher than that of, among others, tomato, eggplant, and most cucurbits.

Okra seeds contain about 20% protein and 20% oil which can be extracted from the seeds.

Cultivation:

Okra originates from South Asia/Africa and is naturally perennial. It thrives in warmth and is sensitive to frost. The optimal growth temperature is above 20 ºC, and temperatures below 10 ºC can be harmful to the plant.

For these reasons, it grows best in Sweden in greenhouses or growing tunnels. It can be grown outdoors but the harvest may be somewhat smaller than under optimal conditions. To improve conditions for outdoor cultivation, in spring when the soil has warmed, the ground can be covered with plastic or other ground cover such as straw/bark to prevent heat loss and thereby extend the growing season into autumn.

Okra is drought-tolerant but fruit formation benefits from continuous watering and nutrient supply.

Prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil.

Okra is self-pollinating, which means you only need one plant to get fruit.

Yields harvest as early as 1-2 months after sowing.

The fruits are picked at an early (immature) stage while they are green to avoid woody taste. A tip is to try breaking off the tip of the fruit – if it breaks, it is fresh; if it bends instead, it is too ripe and better suited for seed harvest.

Sowing:

Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing. Place the seeds in moist soil and cover with 1-2 cm of soil. Keep the sowing moist. Seeds usually germinate within 2-3 weeks. Germination occurs faster at temperatures above 25 ºC.

Characteristics:

Perennial: Perennial
Light: sun
Height: 1–2 m
Germination time: 1-8 weeks
Hardiness zone: Hardy down to 10 ºC

Olive tree - current height 100-120 cm

Common name: Olive tree
Scientific name: Olea europaea
Family: Oleaceae

History & use

The olive tree has been cultivated for over 5000 years and is one of the world's most used useful and cultural plants. It is primarily the unripe, green or black, ripe olives that are harvested for pickling or pressing into oil. Untreated olives are very bitter but can be eaten after soaking or fermenting. The tree is grown in pots, greenhouses, or outdoors in the most favorable locations in Sweden with winter protection. The olive tree is both beautiful and productive. The leaves are gray-green and leathery, and the tree can yield harvests even in pots under the right conditions.

Olive trees are also used for erosion control in exposed areas.

Cultivation

These specimens with thicker trunks have especially good wood maturity, and the supplier states that they withstand temperatures down to –18 °C for short periods, especially in sheltered locations with well-drained soil.

Thrives in full sun, preferably in well-drained, lime-rich soil. Plant in a large pot or directly in the ground in the mildest parts of the country. During winter, the tree is advantageously protected with fleece, jute fabric, or bubble wrap around the pot and/or trunk – especially in exposed locations or when there is a risk of prolonged cold. Water regularly during the growing season but tolerates some drought.

Characteristics

Perennial: Perennial
Growing position: Sun
Height: 5–12 meters
Hardiness zone: 1–2 in sheltered locations, hardy down to –18 °C for short periods
Harvest maturity: After 3–5 years
Self-fertile: Yes, but more abundant harvest with cross-pollination

However, it tolerates frost and temperatures as low as -7 degrees Celsius. If the tree is placed in a favorably sunny and wind-sheltered spot, it is theoretically possible to succeed with outdoor cultivation year-round in the most favorable parts of Sweden – including Skåne, Öland & Gotland. The indicated USDA zone for the tree is zone 8, which corresponds to the most favorable locations in Sweden’s zone 1. The fruits are small and hairless, and are eaten with the peel on. , unlike the hairy kiwifruit we are used to buying in stores.

The fruits are sweet and flavorful and resemble the common kiwi in taste. The variety is very hardy in our Nordic climate and has a compact growth habit, making it suitable for covering a surface - for example a wall or trellis.

The fruits ripen in September-October.

The fruits are a rich source of vitamin C (up to 5 times more than blackcurrants, for example) and can be eaten straight from the plant without peeling. The side branches, or long shoots, then begin to develop. You should stick to a maximum of 4 long shoots per main trunk.

In the third year, the long shoots should also be shortened to 1-1.5 meters. At this time, flowers often begin to form around the first few centimeters of the side branches, which then turn into fine fruits.

In the following years, year by year, you select the best side branches/long shoots on your plant. Cut away the other emerging branches. In this way, you have formed a star-shaped branch attachment, a collar, which supports the rest of the plant with fruits.

Do not leave too many side branches as this will result in a dense plant with fewer fruits. By topping emerging herbaceous branches during the summer you allow more sunlight and air to reach the fruits, which will benefit their growth.

Any pruning of woody plant parts is done in late autumn/early winter to avoid bleeding.

Features:

Year: Perennial
Growing position: sun
Height: 3-4 m
Growing zone: 1-5

It has been cultivated for thousands of years for its beautiful white flowers and intense evening scent, and is still used today in the perfume industry. The flowers can also be used in scent sachets, tea blends (in very small amounts), or as decoration.

In traditional herbal use, jasmine is said to have a calming effect, both as a scent and as a mild tea ingredient. In several cultures, it is used to flavor green tea.

Cultivation

Fragrant jasmine is reported to be hardy down to -15ºC (Phillips. R. & Rix. M. Shrubs., Davis. B. Climbers and Wall Shrubs.) and belongs to USDA growing zones 6-7, which correspond to -23ºC and -17ºC respectively. It is very much a temperate plant, although it belongs to the milder end of the temperate climate scale. It is widely grown in Great Britain: in the northern parts of the country against a wall facing south/west, and in the southern parts it is fully hardy. There are not many sources on cultivation in Sweden yet, but we ourselves will try to grow this against a stone wall facing southwest this year (2025).

In the colder parts of the country, it is preferably grown in a pot – preferably in a greenhouse, sunroom, or bright indoor environment. The fruit is yellow with red hues, juicy and sweet with a mild scent. It is often eaten fresh but is also suitable for pickling, compote, or drying. Since the fruit ripens early and quickly after harvest, it should be consumed or preserved in time to avoid overripeness.

Cultivation

Thrives in sunny and sheltered locations. Plant in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and water regularly during establishment and in dry periods. The variety is not self-pollinating – it is recommended to plant together with another pear variety for a better harvest. The fruit ripens in August–September depending on location.

Characteristics

Perennial: Perennial
Growing site: Sun
Height: 4–7 meters
Growing zone: 1–3
Harvest maturity: After 3–5 years
