History & use
Flat peach, also known as paraguayo, is an old form of peach with flat, sweet, and fragrant fruits. The 'Ornella' variety yields abundant harvests of juicy fruits with a fine balance between sweetness and acidity. The fruits are eaten fresh or used in desserts, jam, and baking.
The species has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region for centuries and has recently become popular in more northern gardens thanks to its good fruits and decorative flowering.
Cultivation
Thrives in warm, sunny, and sheltered locations in well-drained, preferably lime-rich soil. Can be grown outdoors in the mildest parts of the country (zone 1-2) in a spot protected from cold winter winds or in a larger pot kept frost-free during winter.
Water evenly, especially during flowering and fruit setting. Prune carefully after harvest to encourage new fruit setting.
