Asimina trees in various sizes: Height:

Seed-sown trees 2024

15-30 cm

60-90 cm

175-200 cm PICKUP ONLY IN STORE

Seed-sown Asimina plant with a strong root system. These trees come from a hardy mother plant and are seedlings from the seeds we also sell. These trees overwinter outdoors already the first year planted in the ground with winter covering (fleece in this case). The mother plant is of the Sunflower variety. The trees are easily self-fertile but 2 trees are recommended for good pollination. Common name: Asimina, Paw paw Scientific name: Asimina triloba Family: Annonaceae Growth history & use: Asimina is one of the most tropical-like fruits that can grow in our northern climate. The taste resembles a mix of banana and mango, and the texture is like papaya or a perfectly ripe avocado. The fruit looks like a small green mango with golden yellow flesh. The fruits are usually eaten as they are but can also be used to enrich refreshing drinks, baked goods, and cocktails with their mildly tropical flavor. The fruits are rich in vitamins such as riboflavins and B-6. They can also be used to make ice cream. Cultivation: Asimina originates from and grows naturally in North America, often as undergrowth beneath larger trees. They thrive in humus-rich, nutrient-rich, and somewhat moist well-drained soils. Asimina prefers sheltered locations and therefore grows well under larger trees and also likes to stand close together (about 1 m apart) when fully grown. This protects against wind and direct sunlight and facilitates pollination. An east-facing location is suitable for planting Asimina. Plants growing in exposed locations fare significantly worse than those in sheltered spots. Water generously or plant in a place with good water availability. Asimina puts a lot of energy into developing a strong root system at the start – the root can often be thicker than the stem during the first months. When pot-growing, a tip is to plant in deep pots directly; this allows for more effective root development and avoids disturbing the plant before it has grown strong. In open ground, Asimina grows into dense thickets through spreading by root shoots. Characteristics: Lifespan: Perennial Growing position: partial shade Height: 2-12 m Growing zone: 1-5 Harvest maturity: years 4-8

Especially the leaves of the white mulberry tree are favored by silkworms. The white mulberry originates from West Asia. The berries of the white mulberry tree vary in color – from white, to pink, to red, to almost black. The white mulberries have a sweeter taste than their black-fruited relative Morus nigra. The berries are rich in antioxidants and are believed, like tea made from mulberry leaves, to help balance blood sugar levels. Thanks to their unusually high nutritional content, mulberries are considered a so-called "superfood," like goji berry. Dried berries have a creamy caramel-like flavor. Additionally, mulberries contain the substance MFE which stabilizes blood sugar levels and thereby reduces the body's craving for sweets. Therefore, mulberries are a common substitute for those who want to overcome sugar cravings. You can also make juice and jam from the berries. From the leaves, one can brew a healthy tea that has historically been drunk in China and has recently begun to regain popularity in Asia. Cultivation: The white mulberry tree is somewhat hardier than its relative Morus nigra and withstands temperatures down to -30°C. It can grow in most soils but thrives best in loose, nutrient-rich soils. It is hardy in windy coastal climates but optimal growth is given in warm, sheltered locations. Well suited as a trellis tree since the branches are easily bendable. Mulberry trees also fit well in forest gardens as they are a popular host plant among many organisms and provide recurring harvests without much care while protecting plants in the lower layers. Mulberries are self-fertile, which means only one tree is needed to bear fruit. Prune in winter when the tree is dormant to avoid excessive "bleeding," a common trait in mulberry plants. The berries ripen continuously from mid-summer to early autumn. When it is time to harvest, a tip is to pick the berries with a needle to avoid crushing them between your fingers. The earliest known finds of the black mulberry tree date back to around 300 BC. It is possible that Morus nigra originates somewhat further southwest (closer to Europe) in Western Asia than its relative Morus alba, which may explain why Morus nigra has slightly less hardiness in cold climates than its relative. Traditionally, the black mulberry was used to make wine and cosmetics – thanks to its high concentration of anthocyanins which give the berry its deep dark color. But the berries were also grown for fresh consumption. Unlike the white mulberry tree’s fruits, which can vary in color, the black mulberry tree’s fruits are always black when ripe. Chinese Vegetable Tree: current height 15-30 cm Common names: Chinese Vegetable Tree, Chinese Toon, Toona, Cigar Box Tree, Chinese Mahogany, Chinese Toon, Onion Tree Scientific name: Toona sinensis / Cedrela sinensis Family: Meliaceae Growth history & use: The Chinese Vegetable Tree, or Chinese Toon, is a hardy tree with striking foliage that appears in pink-red tones in spring. In autumn, the leaves have a beautiful golden color. The appearance is just the icing on the cake; the tree has a wide range of uses. Young shoots and leaves are widely used in Chinese cooking. The leaves have a crisp texture and the taste is described as savory, nutty, and onion-like. Another source describes the flavor of the cooked leaves as a complex meal in itself—more specifically: like roasted beans with hints of onion and pepper. "Even those who do not like vegetables might enjoy Toon." The leaves are rich in vitamin A and contain about 6% protein, 1% fat, 6.6% carbohydrates, and 1.5% various minerals. The leaves are most often prepared as part of stir-fries or by steaming/boiling to eat as a side vegetable. They can also be fried in a tempura-like manner. Young shoots and leaves are also eaten in salads or pickled. In China, leaves and shoots are dried and then ground to be used as seasoning. The most common uses in the few Swedish homes where the plant is grown seem to be making broth from leaves and shoots, making pesto, or adding pickled leaves to a hamburger. A tea-like drink is made from leaves and shoots, sometimes also from the fruit. Leaves and shoots are heated briefly in a pan and then allowed to dry slowly. Roots, bark, and fruit have been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. The wood is highly valued and resembles mahogany with its dark red color—it is used to make furniture, window frames, and more. The wood also has a delicate scent and is burned in temples as incense. Sometimes called synonymously the Cigar Box Tree because the wood was historically used to make cigar boxes. However, it was mostly the relative T. odorata that was used for this purpose. It produces beautiful white/pink flowers in large clusters hanging from the branches in August. The flowers are sweet-scented and skilled at attracting pollinators. In Chinese culture, T. sinensis is often used symbolically to represent the father figure. From a distance, Chinese Toon can sometimes resemble bamboo when it sends out root shoots and thus forms a grove. Standing under a large tree, the foliage almost looks palm-like against the sky. A striking plant in many ways. Cultivation: Originates from East Asia—from North Korea, through China all the way down to western Indonesia. Easy to care for and fast-growing. Place in a sunny spot. Hardy outdoors in zones 1-2. Has been reported to withstand temperatures down to -25ºC. Thrives best in moist, fertile, and well-drained soils. Tolerates most soil pH levels. Does not thrive in wet ground. Can be kept low-growing and topped for continuous growth of young shoots and leaves. Has good shade tolerance, but the result is slender, elongated trees that reach upwards toward the light. Placed in sun or shade, the tree will eventually reach about 15-20 meters in height. Chinese Toon can live over 100 years. Also top as a larger tree for abundant growth of young leaves and shoots. Sends out root shoots at adult age. Characteristics: Longevity: Perennial Growth position: sun Height: 15-20 meters Hardiness zone: 1-2

Pecan trees in various sizes:

Height: 30-50 cm

Height: 100-120 cm

2 trees are recommended for good pollination. Photo taken in January, which is why no leaves are visible on the tree. Common names: Pecan tree, Pecan hickory, Pecan nut, Pecan Scientific name: Carya illinoinensis Family: Juglandaceae Growth history & use: The pecan nut, with an antioxidant content higher than any other so-called "tree nut," is one of the most popular nuts on the market. The pecan tree originates from North America, where the USA and Mexico together account for over 90% of the global pecan nut production. The nut resembles the continent’s walnut but is more elongated, has a smooth shell, and a completely different aroma. The pecan nut contains abundant minerals such as zinc, magnesium, calcium, and iron as well as Omega-6 fats. The nuts contain monounsaturated fats, and their well-known benefits for good health are many. Pecan nuts can, for example, be used to make a crispy topping for oven-roasted fillets, fill baked peppers, brighten up a salad, sprinkle on ice cream, or simply be eaten as they are. A handful of nuts per day is the recommended daily intake.
Cultivation:
The pecan tree grows in its natural environment along river and stream banks where the tree can stretch its roots deep into the soil. In its natural growing environment, pecan trees often eventually become the tallest and largest trees in the area. They can reach an age of up to 300 years. Thrives best in sunny locations in light sandy soil with good drainage. Plant in a deep pot during the first years or directly into the ground. Plenty of space for the roots to stretch deeply is important to create a strong and healthy tree. Mix compost or stable manure into the top layer of soil. Cover the base of the trunk with some type of mulch, such as wood chips or grass clippings, to prevent the growth of weeds and thus competition for the newly established tree. Plant trees at least 15 meters apart to allow room for their natural large size. Water generously during the first years of establishment. The tree is ready for harvest after 3-8 years. Nuts ripen in late autumn. Harvest when the tree has naturally dropped the nuts to the ground.
Characteristics:
Longevity: Perennial Growing site: sun Height: 20-40 m Growing zone: 1-6 Harvest maturity: 3-8 years

Turkish Tree Hazel: current height 50-70 cm Common names: Turkish Hazel, Tree Hazel, Turk Hazel, Turkish Tree Hazel Scientific name: Corylus colurna Family: Betulaceae Growth history & use: Turkish Hazel is a tree-shaped hazel with a thick trunk and pyramid-shaped crown. It originates from Southeastern Europe and Southwestern Asia - the tree grows wild in the region from the Balkans, to northern Turkey, to northern Iran. It is a fast-growing tree that is hardy in exposed environments, such as urban areas. The Turk Hazel grows about 20-30 meters tall and often has a straight, continuous trunk with more or less horizontal branches. Turkish Hazel produces edible hazelnuts that sit inside fuzzy balls. The nuts are smaller than those of the more common hazel - Corylus avellana - but they have a thicker shell, which makes the Turk Hazel nut more resistant to hungry pests of various kinds - for example nut weevils, birds & squirrels - which otherwise are a big problem when growing common hazel, C. avellana. Turkish Hazel can live for over 200 years. Cultivation: Turkish Hazel is a fast-growing tree that is hardy against drought, wind, heat, and cold once established. The optimal environment is a place with full sun and moist, well-drained soil. However, it also grows well in heavy clay soils and sandy soils. The tree withstands winter temperatures down to -25ºC. Nuts ripen in October-November. Characteristics: Lifespan: Perennial Growing site: sun Height: 20-30 m Growing zone: 1-5

Common names: True Chestnut, Edible Chestnut, Food Chestnut Scientific name: Castanea sativa Family: Fagaceae Growth history & use: The True Chestnut has been part of Europe’s history for several thousand years. From Roman times, it began to spread to the northern parts of Europe - often cultivated by monks in monastery gardens. It is the chestnut-brown shiny nuts that are eaten. The nuts are nutritious and have historically even competed with today’s most common grains. Back then, a flour ground from the chestnuts was used extensively - possibly thanks to the nuts’ rich starch content, something unusual among nuts. A more modern widespread way to enjoy the nuts is to roast them together with butter and salt, common both around the Mediterranean region and in England (with or without butter). Roasted nuts have a taste reminiscent of sweet potato. The tree has a beautiful and majestic growth form similar to the oak. However, the true chestnut grows faster than the oak. In its natural environment, down in southern Europe, the trees can live for over 2000 years.
Cultivation:
Thrives best in a warm and sheltered spot in full sun. Let it grow in well-drained, humus-rich soil. Feel free to mix in grass clippings, compost, or stable manure in the topsoil. Prefers slightly acidic soil - optimal pH value is between 4.5-6. Does not do well in particularly wet soils. Water generously during the first years of establishment. The tree usually bears fruit after 3-5 years. The nuts are typically ready to harvest around September-October.
Characteristics:
Longevity: Perennial Growing position: sun Height: 20-35 m Hardiness zone: 1-2 Harvest maturity: 3-5 years

Stone pines in various sizes:

Height: 30-50 cm

Height: 125-150 cm

The stone pine is a so-called monoecious tree, it has both male and female flowers on the same individual. However, it is not self-fertile, and needs to be pollinated by another individual. So for fruit setting, two individuals are required. Common names: Stone pine, Italian stone pine, Umbrella pine Scientific name: Pinus pinea Family: Pine family (Pinaceae)
History & use:
The stone pine is an evergreen conifer that for millennia has been cultivated for its edible nuts found inside its cones. Contrary to what one might think, these trees are hardy down to -18ºC. Outside their native environment around the Mediterranean, they also grow in, among others, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Stone pine nuts have been used in trade for at least 6000 years and remain an important economic crop today. What are actually the seeds inside the tree’s cones are widely used in cooking, bread baking, and desserts. The nuts are very soft and give a sensation of almost melting in the mouth when eaten naturally. They have a typical nutty and slightly buttery taste with a delicate resinous aftertaste. A vanilla-like flavoring can be extracted from the wood pulp. Unripe stone pine cones can be ground and used as a spice. The tree produces abundant turpentine which acts, among other things, as antibacterial, pain-relieving for muscle aches, and expels worms (Grieve. A). It is effective for ailments in the respiratory organs during, for example, colds and flu. The wood can be used in furniture making and similar carpentry. A green dye is extracted from the needles. In maturity, the tree develops a striking umbrella-like crown, a typical Mediterranean sight.
Cultivation:
Thrives best in a bright location in well-drained, sandy/gravelly soil. A light, well-drained soil is important as waterlogged soils more easily damage roots when the ground freezes during colder months. Tolerates soils from slightly acidic to neutral pH. Does not want to grow in shady locations. Hardy down to -18ºC. If desired, winter protection with, for example, straw and burlap can be used the first winter for added security. Established plants are drought-tolerant. The trees normally live up to 100 years and reach about 12-20 meters in height. The cones mature only in the third year after forming on the tree. Seeds mature in April. Normal fruit-bearing age is between 7-15 years from seedling. Requires male and female plants to bear fruit.
Characteristics:
Life span: Perennial Growing site: sun Height: 12-25 m Hardiness zone: 1-2

Torreya nut: current height: 40-60 cm Common names: Torreya nut, Japanese Torreya, Kaja nut, Kaya Nut, Japanese Nutmeg-Yew Scientific name: Torreya nucifera Family: Taxaceae Growth history & use: Japanese Torreya, or Torreya nut, originates from Japan where it is used similarly to T. grandis in China – the nuts are roasted and eaten or pressed for their vitamin-rich oil. The wood is also used for special purposes – read below... The wood from the Japanese Torreya is considered the most valuable wood for making boards and pieces for the game Go. The wood is prized for its beautiful yellow-golden color, fine and uniform ring structure, and the distinct sound from the click of a stone (piece) against its surface. The tree is protected in Japan due to its scarcity caused by earlier overharvesting. Only the truly old (200-800 years old) Japanese Torreya trees are considered suitable for making the thick Go boards – which makes them highly valued. The finest boards can cost over 19,000 USD. The wood is also considered durable when in contact with water. Wooden water buckets are made from this wood. It is also a traditional medicinal plant in Korea where the nuts are highly valued for their antiparasitic properties. Even in modern times, the tree has been successfully used in scientific studies where several plant parts such as leaves and nuts have shown to have an inhibiting effect on virus replication. (Please conduct further research if interested.) The oil from pressed nuts is burned during meditation in Japanese Buddhism. The nuts are described as having a pleasant, sweet, and slightly resinous, aromatic taste. On top of everything, the tree is very beautiful when mature, gaining a classic and dignified appearance with age. Cultivation: The Torreya nut tree grows 15-25 meters tall and can have a broad trunk up to 1.5 meters in diameter. Thrives in most soils, preferably on the more acidic (pH) and moist side. Does not like to stand in places exposed to strong wind, so a more sheltered location is recommended. Prefers places with high air humidity, or moist soil along a stream bank or similar. Let it grow in partial shade. Hardy down to -18ºC. Most individuals seem to have both male and female flowers – which is needed to produce fruit. However, each individual tends to have a significant majority of either male or female flowers. So indeed, one individual should be enough for nut production, although production would likely benefit from the presence of two individuals. Japanese Raisin Tree - current height: 100-130 cm [Bild på träd kommer snart] Common names: Japanese Raisin Tree, Oriental Raisin Tree, Raisin Tree, Chi-Chao Li Scientific name: Hovenia dulcis Family: Rhamnaceae
Plant history & usage:
The Japanese Raisin tree is a hardy tree found in Asia, from eastern China and Korea to the Himalayas where it grows at altitudes up to 2,000 m above sea level. The fleshy, sweet, and fragrant fruits are eaten raw or cooked. When the fruits are dried, they acquire both a taste and appearance reminiscent of raisins. An extract made from seeds, branches, and young leaves can be eaten like honey and is also used to make wine and candy (Facciola, S.). The seeds contain about 15% protein and 7.8% fat (Duke. J. A. & Ayensu. E. S.). The Raisin tree has long been used in traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese medicines to treat a variety of ailments, including hangover (Hyun TK et al.). The fruits of the Raisin tree are already mentioned in materia medica from the Tang dynasty in the 7th century. Modern research confirms that the flavanonol ampelopsin / dihydromyricetin (DHM), found in plants of the genera Ampelopsis and Cercidiphyllum, can reduce symptoms of alcohol poisoning and withdrawal (Reich L.). Extracts of Hovenia dulcis are commercially available and marketed as a remedy for the aftereffects of excessive alcohol consumption. The tree is traditionally known for its health benefits when consumed as tea. The wood from the Raisin tree is hard and well suited for furniture making.
Cultivation:
Thrives well in well-drained, sandy loam soils in sunny and warm locations. Preferably protected from frost during the first years, thereafter the tree tolerates down to -15°C. However, if the tree is slowly hardened against the cold, the tissue can mature (harden) and then the tree can be hardy down to -25°C (Huxley. A.). Avoid compact and wet soils. The tree is considered fast-growing and usually does not exceed 5-6 meters in height in our climate. In other parts of the world, it can reach heights up to 30 meters. Can be topped to be kept as a shrub or allowed to grow to become more naturally tree-shaped. Ripens in September in Kentucky, USA. Described as having few seeds, about 4% of the fruit weight, and should have a firm, fleshy and smooth flesh. According to breeder Neal Peterson himself, 'Susquehanna®' his favorite of all the varieties they have developed. General information about Asimina: Asimina is one of the most tropical-like fruits that can grow in our Nordic climate. The taste is reminiscent of a mix of banana and mango and the texture is similar to papaya or a perfectly ripe avocado. The fruit looks like a small green mango with golden yellow flesh. The fruits are most often eaten as is, but can also be used to enhance refreshing drinks, baked goods, and cocktails with their mild tropical flavor. The fruits are rich in vitamins such as riboflavin and B-6. The fruits can also be used to make ice cream.
Cultivation :
Asimina originates from and grows naturally in North America, often as undergrowth under larger trees. They thrive in humus-rich, nutritious and slightly moist, well-drained soils. Asimina thrives in sheltered locations and therefore prefers to grow under larger trees and also likes to stand close together (about 1 m apart) when fully grown. This protects against wind and direct sunlight and facilitates pollination. An east-facing location is a suitable place to plant Asimina. Plants that grow in exposed locations do significantly worse than plants that grow in sheltered locations. Water abundantly or plant in a location with good water availability. Asiminas put a lot of energy into developing a strong root system in the beginning – the root can often be thicker than the trunk in the first few months. When growing in pots, a tip is to plant in deep pots directly, this allows for more efficient root development and you don't have to disturb the plant before it has grown. In the open field, Asimina grows into dense bushes by spreading via root shoots.
Features :
Year: Perennial Growing position: partial shade Height: 2-12 m Growing zone: 1-5 Ripe for harvest: years 4-8

Japanese Maple 80-120 cm (Acer palmatum)

Japanese Maple in Various Sizes Height:

80-100 cm

100–120 cm [PICKUP ONLY IN STORE]

Common name: Japanese Maple Scientific name: Acer palmatum Family: Sapindaceae
Plant History & Use
Japanese maple is a deciduous tree native to Japan, Korea, and China and has been cultivated for centuries for its graceful growth habit and vivid autumn colors. It is used both as an ornamental tree, in bonsai form, and in natural gardens where one wants to add structure, shade, and color. Young leaves are edible in small amounts and can be used as garnish. In Japan, the leaves are sometimes fried as a seasonal dish. The tree can also be tapped for sap early in spring—especially in colder climates. The sap’s sugar content is low but can be drunk as is or boiled down to a thin syrup, similar to maple syrup. The best sap flow occurs on warm sunny days after a night of frost. The leaves have also been used practically to help preserve root vegetables and apples—they have been placed as protective layers around the harvest to keep it fresh longer. In folk medicine, the leaves have been used in cooling compresses. However, the plant’s main function is aesthetic—as a shaper in garden spaces, where its silhouette and leaf color play the leading role.
Cultivation
Thrives in partial shade to sun, preferably in a sheltered spot. Well-drained, moisture-retentive soil with slight acidity is ideal. Japanese maple can be grown in pots, especially smaller varieties, but also thrives in the ground in a protected location. Protect from strong spring sun and wind to avoid leaf damage. Does not tolerate drying out—consistent watering is important.
Characteristics
Perennial: Perennial Light conditions: Partial shade to sun Height: 2–4 meters Hardiness zone: 1–3 (4-5 in sheltered, well-drained locations)
