The seeds are surrounded by juicy fruit flesh that is sweet in taste – it is said to resemble the flesh of the dragon fruit. In Japan, it is mainly eaten as a seasonal delicacy. The fruit is sometimes eaten together with lemon to enhance the flavor.</span></p> <p><span>The pod’s skin is used in cooking where it is, among other things, filled with minced meat and then fried.</span></p> <p><span>The seeds are bitter and should not be chewed, but can be swallowed whole or simply spat out to avoid the bitter taste.</span></p> <p><span>The fruits can be made into jam, jelly, juice or smoothies, and even ice cream can be made from the fruit flesh.</span></p> <p><span>Young shoots can be added to salads. Leaves can be dried and made into tea.</span></p> <p><span>Often used as a covering plant: both along walls, fences, fields and other less attractive areas.</span></p> <p><span>Akebia is also often used as a ground cover on slopes to prevent erosion.</span></p> <p><span>The Five-leaved Akebia gives the garden an eastern appearance.</span></p> <p><span><meta charset="utf-8">The flowers are said to smell of everything from vanilla to honey and chocolate. The flowers are visually clearly divided into male and female flowers.</span></p> <p>There have been <a title="Bioconverted Fruit Extract of Akebia Quinata Exhibits Anti-Obesity Effects in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Rats" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9656223/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #4e991d;"><strong>studies</strong></span></a> showing that consumption of <em>Akebia quinata</em> reduces fat accumulation in the body and lowers cholesterol levels in the blood, and thus can be effective in combating obesity. This is a relatively new finding (2022) and theories that this fruit may become more well-known in the near future have been expressed.</p> <p>The same study has also shown that <em>A. quinata</em> appears cleansing for the liver, kidneys and the heart & blood vessel system. Regular consumption could lead to improved health. <em>A. quinata</em> is diuretic.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8"><meta charset="utf-8">When consuming the plant, it is also said to inhibit bacterial and fungal infections. The roots act as a fever reducer.</p> <p><span>In traditional Chinese medicine, akebia is used to treat urinary tract infections, insufficient milk production and rheumatoid arthritis.</span></p> <p><span>The vines are also used for weaving baskets.</span></p> <p><span>Oil is extracted from the seeds which is used in traditional Chinese soap making.</span></p> <p><strong>Cultivation</strong><span>:</span><br><span></span></p> <p><span>Prefers a sunny spot, although it is hardy in shady locations. Prefers somewhat sandy soils with good drainage and good moisture retention. A humus-rich, light sandy soil is best – like potting soil mixed with sand. Can grow in soils with both higher and lower pH values.</span></p> <p><span>Likes regular watering. However, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Also very frost-hardy – can withstand lower temperatures between -20ºC and <meta charset="utf-8">-30ºC.</span></p> <p><span>Generally fast-growing. Cultivated in Sweden in the 17th century under the name <em>strawberry</em> . Since the beginning of the 20th century, however, the plant has been completely replaced by the modern strawberry, which also took over its name. Origin from the Caucasus Mountains.</span></p> <p> <span>The berries of the park wild strawberry are larger than the common wild strawberry ( <em>F. vesca</em> ) but smaller than the strawberry. The berries have an intense aroma and taste, similar to a mixture of strawberry, raspberry and pineapple. Juicy flesh. The berries are red only on the part where the sun hits.</span></p> <p> <span>Blooms more abundantly and more beautifully than the common wild strawberry.</span></p> <p> <span>Best eaten straight from the plant, but can also be used to make juice and jelly.</span></p> <p> <span>Like many other ground covers, the park strawberry is effective in preventing erosion: for example, in bare plains where water often washes away soil.</span><span> </span></p> <p data-start="0" data-end="192">'Schöne Wienerin' is an old variety that was particularly popular in the late 19th century. They thrive best in a light sandy soil rich in humus. Before that, the fruit is very astringent and tasteless – somewhat like the unripe fruits of the relative Kaki (<em>Diospyros kaki</em>), which however does not remain astringent as long. Interestingly, the fruit can develop this sought-after flavor prematurely if the fruits are exposed to frost.</p> <p>The fruit can be dried like dates. When dried, the astringency disappears and the flavor develops into something resembling dates.</p> <p>The fruit is considered fever-reducing and the seeds calming in Chinese medicine (Chopra. R. N., Nayar. S. L. & Chopra. I. C.).</p> <p>The fruit contains about 1.9% protein, 0.2% fat, 47.7% carbohydrate, 1% various minerals.</p> <p>The wood is durable, flexible, and resistant to rot. But above all, it is a very effective accumulator of nutrients, i.e. a good soil improver. Comfrey grows quickly and its roots are deep, which gives the plant access to nutrients from deeper soil layers that are otherwise inaccessible to most plants. It is mainly minerals such as potassium and calcium that are stored in the leaves, but also magnesium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, etc.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">The leaves of comfrey can be cut down throughout the year and used as mulch, or mixed into the soil to make the nutrients available to other plants. Comfrey leaves are good as fertilizer for fruit trees and berry bushes thanks to their potassium and phosphorus content.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> Comfrey has a long growing season, from early winter to late autumn.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> If the leaves are not cut down before winter, they will wither and provide nutrients to the soil they grow in. New leaves will start to grow on the plant immediately after the snow melts.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> You can also make your own comfrey fertilizer by filling a container with the leaves and then filling it to the brim with water. Let it sit for a couple of days and then mix the fertilizer water with 10 parts water to water the plants.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Effective as an edging plant around manure piles to prevent nutrient leakage, but also as an edging plant around crops and other places where you don't want rotograss to spread. Comfrey's dense root system acts like an underground wall, making it difficult for other roots to get through.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> Comfrey creates an attractive environment for other plants in the garden - whether it's to attract pollinators or to act as a natural fertilizer.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> <strong data-mce-fragment="1">Culture:</strong></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> Comfrey is a herbaceous perennial, meaning it continues to grow in the area even after the leaves have withered during the winter.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> It is an extremely easy-care plant and is tolerant of site selection. The tree is characterized by its fluffy, light pink flowers that resemble a silky feather crown. Its beauty has made it a cherished tree worldwide.</p> <p>The silk tree has also been used for its edible and medicinal properties for centuries. Young leaves are eaten as a vegetable – boiled or steamed. They are described as having an aromatic taste. Flowers are also boiled for consumption. A historically well-known kitchen plant in its native regions.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8">The plant’s bark, leaves, flowers & flower buds are used to make tea and extracts with reputed health benefits. Flowers are harvested when opening and bark is harvested in spring or late summer to be dried for later use.</p> <p>Tea made from the flowers is said to have a delicate, sweet taste and to relieve stress, tension, and even mild depression. This is likely one of the reasons the tree is also called "The Tree of Happiness." Please judge for yourself if this applies to you.</p> <p>One can also make jelly from freshly opened flowers.</p> <p>In traditional Asian medicine, it has been used among other things to calm nerves and as a mild sedative for sleep difficulties.</p> <p>Flowers have been observed to be effective in attracting bees & butterflies (and hummingbirds in America).<br><meta charset="utf-8"></p> <p>This tree, like other plants in the Pea family (Fabaceae), has a partnership with soil bacteria that bind nitrogen from the air and fix it to the tree’s roots. In this way, the surrounding soil is enriched with nitrogen that would otherwise be inaccessible to plants – therefore we call plants with such a partnership <em>Soil Improvers</em>.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">The wood is also used to make furniture.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><strong data-mce-fragment="1">Cultivation:</strong></p> <p>The silk tree can be grown outdoors in the more favorable places in Sweden (roughly from Uppsala and southwards according to plant zones). <meta charset="utf-8">However, the tree is hardy down to -25<meta charset="utf-8"><span data-mce-fragment="1">°C, so geographic location is often ambiguous and success largely depends on the actual growing site. </span><span data-mce-fragment="1">It</span> thrives best in warm and sunny places – a good spot is sheltered from wind against a south-facing wall.</p> <p>Young shoots can be sensitive to cold and frost. Please protect the tree during winter if you grow it outdoors, for example with straw around the base and wind protection in the form of fleece attached to stakes around the tree if it stands in an exposed location. This is reasonably only needed the first winter after purchase of these 2-year-old trees.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8"><span data-mce-fragment="1">Otherwise, the silk tree can</span> be grown in a pot that is overwintered in a sheltered place.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8">The silk tree is a fast-growing tree with a relatively low water need that can stand in direct sun. The tree prefers well-drained soil and moderate watering. More precisely: water deeply and infrequently to encourage faster growth. Fairly drought-tolerant.</p> <p>Tolerant of pruning. Can be shaped to grow close to a house wall, for example. The wood is also used for special purposes – read below...</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The wood from the Japanese Torreya is considered the most valuable wood for making boards and pieces for the game <em>Go</em>. The wood is prized for its beautiful yellow-golden color, fine and uniform ring structure, and the distinct sound from the click of a stone (piece) against its surface.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1"><meta charset="utf-8">The tree is protected in Japan due to its scarcity caused by earlier overharvesting. Only the truly old (200-800 years old) Japanese Torreya trees are considered suitable for making the thick Go boards – which makes them highly valued. The finest boards can cost over 19,000 USD.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The wood is also considered durable when in contact with water. Wooden water buckets are made from this wood.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">It is also a traditional medicinal plant in Korea where the nuts are highly valued for their antiparasitic properties. Even in modern times, the tree has been successfully used in scientific studies where several plant parts such as leaves and nuts have shown to have an inhibiting effect on virus replication. (Please conduct further research if interested.)</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The oil from pressed nuts is burned during meditation in Japanese Buddhism.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The nuts are described as having a pleasant, sweet, and slightly resinous, aromatic taste.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">On top of everything, the tree is very beautiful when mature, gaining a classic and dignified appearance with age.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><strong data-mce-fragment="1">Cultivation:</strong></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">The Torreya nut tree grows 15-25 meters tall and can have a broad trunk up to 1.5 meters in diameter.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Thrives in most soils, preferably on the more acidic (pH) and moist side. Does not like to stand in places exposed to strong wind, so a more sheltered location is recommended. Prefers places with high air humidity, or moist soil along a stream bank or similar. Let it grow in partial shade.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><meta charset="utf-8">Hardy down to -18ºC.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Most individuals seem to have both male and female flowers – which is needed to produce fruit. However, each individual tends to have a significant majority of either male or female flowers. It is a hardy Kiwi variety that can grow and produce good fruit outdoors in our climate. The fruits are small and hairless, and are eaten with the skin on, unlike the hairy kiwifruit we are used to buying in stores.</p> <p> The variety 'Weiki' is a German variety that, like 'Jumbo', is known for its large fruits. The fruits are sweet and flavorful and resemble the common kiwi in taste. The variety is very hardy in our Nordic climate and has a compact growth habit, making it suitable for covering a surface - for example, a wall or trellis.</p> <p> 'Weiki' produces cherry-red fruits with firm flesh that have a good shelf life after harvest.</p> <p> The fruits ripen in September-October.</p> <p class="p1"><span class="s1">The fruits are a rich source of vitamin C (up to 5 times more than blackcurrants, for example) and can be eaten straight from the plant without peeling.
