<p data-mce-fragment="1"> Jiaogulan, also known as the "herb of immortality," is one of the lesser-known traditional Chinese herbs. For centuries, it was used almost exclusively by the people of a mountainous region in southern China where the herb grows wild.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <span data-mce-fragment="1"><meta charset="utf-8">Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as we know it today originated in the center of the country,<meta charset="utf-8"> far from this region. For this reason, Jiaogulan is not included in the TCM standardized list of medicines and is therefore not used to the same extent as other Chinese medicinal herbs.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <meta charset="utf-8">In the 1970s, China conducted a comprehensive census. It was discovered that residents of certain regions, mainly Guizhou province, were living longer than average - often more than 100 years. It turned out that the oldest residents had regularly drunk Jiaogulan tea throughout their lives. Partly from this incident comes the nickname "herb of immortality", but also from the numerous scientific studies that have been conducted on the mysterious herb.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1">Modern recognition of Jiaogulan outside of China stems from research into sugar substitutes. When examining the sweetening agent in Jiaogulan, saponins were found that were identical to those found in <span style="color: #4e991d;" data-mce-style="color: #4e991d;"><a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/koreansk-ginseng-panax-ginseng" title="Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)" style="color: #4e991d;" target="_blank" data-mce-style="color: #4e991d;"><strong>Korean Ginseng ( <em>Panax ginseng</em> )</strong></a></span> . Further research discovered several additional saponins that were comparable or identical to those found in P. ginseng. The saponins in P. ginseng are called ginsenosides, while those found in Jiaogulan are called gypenosides. Compared to Korean Ginseng, Jiaogulan has the advantage of being much easier to grow and ready to harvest much earlier.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <meta charset="utf-8">Today, Jiaogulan is well used in China and widely consumed by those interested in its reputed rejuvenating properties.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> The leaves taste sweet and are used to make tea. Can also be cooked - in a wok for example.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> The herb is used today in the treatment of diabetes and a number of other ailments. There is much to read about this herb for those interested.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <strong>Culture:</strong></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> Jiaogulan has a wide range in nature: it stretches all the way from China to Korea and Japan, down to Southeast Asia and even to New Guinea. It is a plant that thrives in a variety of climates. It is a climber that can reach a height of 8 meters. You can either grow it against something it can wrap around, or let it creep along the ground in low-growing shrubs.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1">Jiaogulan should be able to grow in the majority of Sweden's zones 1-2, it can handle temperatures down to -10°C. It prefers to grow in a loamy, well-drained but moisture-retaining soil (typical humus character) - potting soil works well. Place in a sunny location.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> Plant in a pot and overwinter in a greenhouse the first year to give the plant slightly milder conditions. You can also overwinter it in a storage room, basement, etc. if there is enough light. If the plant survives the first year with protected overwintering, you can try planting the plant out in the ground next spring to give it a try to overwinter without protection the coming winter. You can always set up windbreaks made of non-woven fabric and stakes around the plant and cover the base with straw to create milder conditions when growing directly in the open field.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1">Alternatively, move the plant indoors during the winter and place it outside during the summer months. If your plant has grown properly after the summer, top it and make tea from the leaves to adapt it to its new indoor growing space. With this method, it is possible to grow Jiaogulan throughout Sweden.</p>

<p> Minikiwi is a perennial climbing plant that originates in Japan, Korea and northern China. It is a hardy Kiwi variety that can grow and produce good fruit outdoors in our climate. The fruits are small and hairless, and are eaten with the skin on, unlike the hairy kiwifruit we are used to buying in stores.</p>
<p> The variety 'Ken's Red' is a New Zealand cross between Actinida arguta and Actinidia melanandra. Ken's Red is possibly the Minikiwi with the largest fruits - the fruits are sweet and flavorful and reminiscent of the regular kiwi in taste. The variety is very hardy in our Nordic climate and has a compact growth habit, which makes it suitable for covering a surface - for example a wall or trellis.</p>
<p> 'Ken's Red' produces wine-red fruits with firm flesh that have a good shelf life after harvest.</p>
<p>The fruits ripen in September-October.</p>
<p class="p1"> <span class="s1">The fruits are a rich source of vitamin C (up to 5 times more than blackcurrants, for example) and can be eaten straight from the plant without peeling. The fruits can also be used to make jam.</span></p>
<p class="p1"> <span class="s1">In Korea, young leaves are used in a vegetable dish called namul.</span></p>
<p> <strong>Culture:</strong></p>
<p class="p1"> <span class="s1">Mini kiwi 'Ken's Red' is a hardy variety that can withstand temperatures down to -25 <span class="s2">℃</span> .</span> It has a winding growth habit and<meta charset="utf-8"> can grow up to 3-4 meters high. Some type of climbing support is necessary, such as a trellis, wall or pergola. <span class="Apple-converted-space">If you want to grow in a forest garden, it works great to let Minikiwn grow against a tree trunk - just try to make sure that there is a fairly good amount of light entering the plant.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="Apple-converted-space">In June, 'Ken's Red' blooms with small, fragrant white flowers that then turn into tasty, smooth small fruits.<meta charset="utf-8"> The summer green leaves turn a beautiful yellow in the fall.</span></p>
<p class="p1"> <span class="s1">Mini kiwi thrives best in a sunny, warm and sheltered location. The optimal growing location is in a greenhouse, against a wall or trellis. However, it also does well outside greenhouses and in shadier environments - but for best fruit production, the plant should at least be provided with good light and wind protection.</span></p>
<p class="p1"> <span class="s1">Plant Minikiwi in a nutrient-rich, well-drained and moisture-retaining soil. If you want to fertilize, it should be done with, for example, blueberry fertilizer, as Minikiwi thrives best in a slightly acidic pH. Natural fertilizer and compost also work well.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">'Ken's Red' needs to be planted with a male plant (within the same genus: <em>Actinidia spp.</em> ) to bear fruit. It may take a couple of years before the plant starts producing fruit. An established plant can produce large amounts of</span> <span class="s1">fruit per year, around 25kg per plant and in some cases more.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><meta charset="utf-8"> It is advantageous to grow against a trellis to get good air circulation and more sunlight for the fruits.</p>
<p class="p1"> Pruning:</p>
<ul>
<li> The first year of planting, it is a good idea to let the plant start to take shape in 1-3 main stems. Top your main stem(s) at the end of the season to make them stronger next year.</li>
<li> The second year you top the main shoots that come from the main trunks again. The side branches, or long shoots, then begin to develop. You should stick to a maximum of 4 long shoots per main trunk.</li>
<li>In the third year, the long shoots should also be shortened to 1-1.5 meters. At this time, flowers often begin to form around the first few centimeters of the side branches, which then turn into fine fruits.</li>
<li> In the following years, year by year, you select the best side branches/long shoots on your plant. Cut away the other emerging branches. In this way, you have formed a star-shaped branch attachment, a collar, which supports the rest of the plant with fruits.</li>
<li> Do not leave too many side branches as this will result in a dense plant with fewer fruits. By topping emerging herbaceous branches during the summer you allow more sunlight and air to reach the fruits, which will benefit their growth.</li>
<li> Any pruning of woody plant parts is done in late autumn/early winter to avoid bleeding.</li>

<p data-mce-fragment="1">Sweetleaf® is a raspberry species originating from China, where it grows mainly in the southern provinces of Guizhou, Guang Dong and Guangxi. The shrub is relatively unknown but is becoming highly sought after due to its sweetening ability and hardy qualities.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"><meta charset="utf-8"> <span class="s1">Sweetleaf® can be described as a more hardy alternative to Stevia: as its leaves contain so-called 'rubusosides' which are part of the same glycoside group as steviosides, and as it is fully winter-hardy and even has a vigorous growth habit.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <span class="s1"><meta charset="utf-8">The two glycosides stevioside and rubusoside are very similar in their chemical structure and therefore have a nearly identical sweetening effect. The chemical molecule 'rubusoside' in its pure form is approximately 200 times sweeter than commercially refined sugar from sugar beets in its pure form.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Even fresh leaves have an enormous sweetness. If you chew on a leaf, it tastes quite neutrally "green" at first, before a distinctive, broad, dull sweetness takes over the taste buds.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <span class="s1">Sweetleaf<meta charset="utf-8"> ® has no odd aftertaste, which stevia is often criticized for.</span><span class="s1"><meta charset="utf-8"></span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <span class="s1"><meta charset="utf-8">To use Sweetleaf®: tear or cut the freshly harvested leaves into pieces and then blanch them in boiling water. In the process, the sweetening substances are released from the leaves and absorbed by the water. The amount of leaves used is purely a matter of taste. Some like it a little sweeter (more leaves); others don't like it quite so sweet (fewer leaves). You can also rub the leaves in your palms before blanching them, so the leaf structure breaks down and the sweeteners can more easily escape from the cells.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> The leaves can also be used as a sweetener in dried form, powdered or by boiling a syrup with them.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> Great for sweetening teas and pastries.</p>

<em data-mce-fragment="1">Rubus chingii var. suavissimus</em> is one of four species used in Guangxi, China to make the ethnomedicine tiancha (sweet tea).</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <strong data-mce-fragment="1">Culture:</strong></p>
<p class="p1"> <span class="s1">Sweetleaf® is a vigorous, deciduous shrub. The fast-growing shoots have enormous vigor with an upright growth habit and reach a final height of approximately 250 cm. Due to the strong growth force, the fresh shoots are very tolerant of pruning and grow back quickly.</span></p>
<p class="p1"> <span class="s1">The fresh, green shoots are heavily armed with thorns, but this is not of major importance as only the leaves are of interest. The leaves have a striking, five-lobed shape.</span></p>
<p class="p1"> Best grown in well-drained soil in sunny to semi-shade.<meta charset="utf-8"> location. Generally tolerant of many different soils.</p>

<h4><strong>Plant history & use:</strong></h4>
<p class="p1"> Mojo Berry® is a short-growing mulberry<meta charset="utf-8"> variety that bears fruit on both older and new branches, which means you can pick mulberries in the first year, unlike the usual 5 or 6 years that it takes most other mulberries.</p>
<p class="p1"> This dwarf, compact variety only reaches a height of around 1.5 m (compared to regular mulberries which can grow up to 6-8 m tall), making it suitable for any garden.</p>
<p class="p1"> Unlike other varieties that only produce fruit during a 3-week period towards the end of summer, Mojo Berry® produces berries over a very long period, from May right through to September.</p>
<p class="p1"> The fruits are great for using in jam, cake or other dishes.</p>
<p> Mojo Berry® is beautiful as a solitary tree in a pot on the terrace/patio<meta charset="utf-8"> or in a pot with co-planting together with other plants and is also nice as a hedge plant/border.</p>
<p> <strong>General information about Mulberry:</strong></p>
<p><span></span><span>Mulberry trees are one of our oldest cultivated plants. The black mulberry tree, like the white variety,</span> <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/vitt-mullbar-morus-alba" title="White mulberry (Morus alba)" target="_blank"><strong><span style="color: #4e991d;">Morus alba</span></strong></a> <span>, originates from West Asia - however, the black mulberry tree came to Europe a couple of hundred years before the white one. The first findings of knowledge about the black mulberry tree were already around 300 BC. It may be that Morus nigra originates somewhat further to the southwest (closer to Europe) in West Asia than its relative Morus alba, and that this is why Morus nigra also has a slightly worse hardiness in cold climates than its relative.</span></p>
<p><span>Traditionally, the black mulberry was used to make wine and cosmetics - thanks to its high concentration of anthocyanins which give the berry its deep dark colour. However, the berries were also grown for fresh consumption.</span></p>
<p> <span>Unlike the white mulberry tree, which can vary in color, the black mulberry tree's fruits are always black when ripe. The black mulberry is also more acidic.</span></p>
<p> The berries are rich in antioxidants and, like mulberry leaf tea, are thought to help balance blood sugar levels. This is thanks to<span> </span><span>content of the substance MFE which stabilizes blood sugar levels and thus suppresses the body's cravings for sweets. Therefore, mulberries are a common substitute for those who want to get rid of their cravings for sweets.</span></p>
<p>Due to the berries' unusually high nutritional content, mulberries, like <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/collections/froavdelning/products/gojibar-bocktorne-lycium-barbarum" title="Goji (Lycium barbarum)" target="_blank"><strong><span style="color: #4e991d;">the goji berry</span></strong></a> , are considered a so-called "superfood".</p>
<p> In addition to mulberry wine, you can also make juice and jam from the berries.</p>
<p> The leaves can be used to brew healthy tea, which has historically been drunk in China and has recently begun to become popular in Asia again.</p>

<p> Mojo Berry® is hardy down to -10 <span>°</span> <span>C = outdoor cultivation zone 1-2</span> . If you cover the tree with sheep wool or similar for the winter, it can survive outdoors up to zone 5. Alternatively, grow in a pot and place in a greenhouse/storage over the winter.</p>
<p> The tree can grow in most soils but thrives best in loose, nutrient-rich soils. It is resistant to windy coastal climates but grows best in warm, wind-sheltered locations.</p>
<p>Suitable as a trellis tree as the branches are<span> </span>easily bendable.</p>
<p> Mulberry trees are also well suited to forest orchards as they are a popular host plant among many organisms and provide recurring harvests without much maintenance, as well as protecting plants in lower layers.</p>
<p> Mulberries are self-fertile, meaning that only one tree is needed to produce fruit.</p>
<p> Prune in winter when the tree is dormant to avoid excessive "bleeding", which is otherwise a common characteristic of<span> </span>mulberry plants.</p>
<p> The berries ripen continuously from May to September.</p>
<p><strong></strong> The berries are harvested when the color has changed from red to jet black. One tip is to pick the berries with a needle to avoid crushing them between your fingers.</p>

<p data-mce-fragment="1">Genuine chestnuts have existed in European history for several thousand years. From Roman times it began to spread to the more northern parts of Europe - then often cultivated by monks in monastery gardens.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1">It is the chestnut brown shiny nuts that are consumed. Nuts are nutritious and have historically even competed with today's most common grains. It was then a flour ground from the chestnuts that was used abundantly - possible thanks to the nuts' rich content of starch, something that is otherwise unusual among nuts.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1">A more modern widespread way of enjoying the nuts is to roast them together with butter and salt, this is common both around the Mediterranean region and in England (with or without butter). Roasted nuts have a flavor reminiscent of sweet potatoes.<br></p>

<p>The tamarisk is a graceful deciduous tree with long, flexible branches that are filled with plumes of pale pink flowers - on bare branches - in late spring. The flowers then change to olive green small, scaly leaves.</p>
<p>The tamarisk is known for its ability to absorb and concentrate salts in its plant parts. This is useful where you have an outlet for gray water. Gray water is the water that comes out when we clean used water from our kitchens and bathrooms - e.g. dishwashers, washing machines, showers, etc. When this water is purified, various salts are often left behind, which are carried out into the runoff. It is in these outlets that plants such as the Praktamarisken are planted, which seems to be one of the most efficient plants precisely at taking up salt from the ground it grows in. Inability to take up excess salts in the soil can result in problems for surrounding plants, then it affects their natural ability to absorb water via osmosis.</p>
<p><meta charset="utf-8"> You can also grow the Praktamarisken as a shrub. If you don't shape it into a tree by pruning, it usually achieves the structure of a bush on its own.</p>

<p><span data-mce-fragment="1">The highlight of this akebia is its oblong, edible, purple fruits that form inside pods that open up on their own when ripe. The seeds are surrounded by a juicy flesh that is sweet to the taste - it is said to be reminiscent of the flesh of dragon fruit. In Japan, it is eaten mainly as a seasonal delicacy. The fruit is sometimes eaten with lemon to enhance the taste.</span></p>
<p> <span data-mce-fragment="1">The shell of the pod is used in cooking, where it is filled with minced meat and then fried.</span></p>

This is a relatively new finding (2022) and theories are being floated that this fruit could become more well-known in the near future.</p>
<p> The same study has also shown that <em>A. quinata</em> has a cleansing effect on the liver, kidneys and cardiovascular system. Regular consumption could have led to improved health. <em>A. quinata</em> is diuretic.</p>
<p><meta charset="utf-8"><meta charset="utf-8"> When consumed, the plant is also said to be an inhibitor against bacterial and fungal infections. The roots act as a fever reducer.</p>

<p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The black raspberry, <em>Rubus occidentalis,</em> is a black colored variant of the more common red raspberry, <em>Rubus ideaus.</em> As can be seen above, however, they are two completely different species. The black raspberry is described as highly disease resistant, easy to grow and early bearing. The black raspberry is also more resistant to heat and drought. The berries keep their shape for several days in the fridge after harvesting.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The black raspberry has also been called the "King of Berries" due to its reputed health benefits. The berries contain high levels of antioxidants and also anthocyanins (the group of substances that give fruits and vegetables their dark color - blue/purple/black) which have an anti-inflammatory effect and are also linked to processes in the body in the form of improved memory and increased eyesight .</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The variety 'Black Jewel' has berries with a high sweetness and a pleasant aftertaste that remains after the berries have been eaten. The berries have a glossy appearance and make an eye-catching addition to the cultivation.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The berries can be both dried and frozen for later use. They are good in smoothies. You can also make jam and juice from black raspberries.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"><strong>Culture:</strong></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1">Grow in a well-drained soil in a sunny location. They thrive best in a sandy soil rich in humus. To give the plant a humus-rich soil, you can then crowd plant residues (e.g. grass clippings) into the top layer of soil or cover the soil with a layer of plant residues.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1">It may be good to note that the black raspberry is a tall-growing raspberry species, the bush normally grows 2-3 meters high.</p>

The black mulberry tree, like the white variety,</span> <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/vitt-mullbar-morus-alba" title="White mulberry (Morus alba)" target="_blank" data-mce-href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/vitt-mullbar-morus-alba"><strong data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1" style="color: #4e991d;" data-mce-style="color: #4e991d;">Morus alba</span></strong></a> <span data-mce-fragment="1">, originates from West Asia - however, the black mulberry tree came to Europe a couple of hundred years before the white one. The first findings of knowledge about the black mulberry tree were already around 300 BC. It may be that Morus nigra originates somewhat further to the southwest (closer to Europe) in West Asia than its relative Morus alba, and that this is why Morus nigra also has a slightly worse hardiness in cold climates than its relative.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">Traditionally, the black mulberry was used to make wine and cosmetics - thanks to its high concentration of anthocyanins which give the berry its deep dark colour. However, the berries were also grown for fresh consumption.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <span data-mce-fragment="1">Unlike the white mulberry tree, which can vary in color, the black mulberry tree's fruits are always black when ripe. The black mulberry is also more acidic.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> The berries are rich in antioxidants and, like mulberry leaf tea, are thought to help balance blood sugar levels. This is thanks to<span> </span><span data-mce-fragment="1">content of the substance MFE which stabilizes blood sugar levels and thus suppresses the body's cravings for sweets. Therefore, mulberries are a common substitute for those who want to get rid of their cravings for sweets.</span></p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1">Due to the berries' unusually high nutritional content, mulberries, like <a data-mce-fragment="1" href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/collections/froavdelning/products/gojibar-bocktorne-lycium-barbarum" title="Goji (Lycium barbarum)" target="_blank" data-mce-href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/collections/froavdelning/products/gojibar-bocktorne-lycium-barbarum"><strong data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1" style="color: #4e991d;" data-mce-style="color: #4e991d;">the goji berry</span></strong></a> , are considered a so-called "superfood".</p>

Tolerant in windy coastal climates but optimal growth occurs in warm, wind-sheltered locations.</p>

<p data-mce-fragment="1"> Mulberry trees are also well suited to forest orchards as they are a popular host plant among many organisms and provide recurring harvests without much maintenance, as well as protecting plants in lower layers.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> Mulberries are self-fertile, meaning that only one tree is needed to produce fruit.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> Prune in winter when the tree is dormant to avoid excessive "bleeding", which is otherwise a common characteristic of<span data-mce-fragment="1"> </span>mulberry plants.</p>
<p data-mce-fragment="1"> The berries ripen continuously from mid-summer to early autumn.</p>

<p>This interesting shrub also has the ability to contribute to the surrounding environment. Its deep roots help improve soil structure and can help keep erosion-prone areas in check. Its flowers are fragrant and also attract pollinating insects - a welcome addition to biodiversity.</p>
