If there is access to a greenhouse, it is an excellent place for the Thai eggplant.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Alternatively, grow as an annual in Sweden. The Karen people have lived in the region for over 2000 years and were one of the first inhabitants of the area. Karenchilin is hardier than other tropical chilies. The chilies typically have a high heat and a distinctive fruity and sweet flavor that really makes its mark in the dishes it is used in.</p> <meta charset="utf-8"> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Karenchilin is easily recognized by its green, yellow, orange &amp; red fruits with a slightly dented surface. Fruits in different stages are often visible on the plant at the same time a little into the season, hence the colorful impression of the plant. Another characteristic of Karenchilin is that its fruits usually always point upwards on the plant.</p> <meta charset="utf-8"> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> <span>The Scoville Heat Units (SHU) of the Karen Chili can vary depending on growing conditions, but it typically ranges between 50,000 and 100,000 SHU. This places the Karen Chili at a medium to hot level on the Scoville scale, a level that most other Thai Chili peppers fall into.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> <strong data-mce-fragment="1">Culture:</strong></p> <meta charset="utf-8"> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span>Karen Chili can be grown both in pots and in the garden. It needs well-drained soil and a sunny location to thrive. It thrives in a warm and humid environment - both during germination and growth. Under optimal conditions, it is a high-yielding variety that can produce an abundance of fruit during the summer months.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> <span>However, it is one of the hardier tropical chili varieties in its ability to grow and produce in colder temperatures. It is not frost hardy. So it is grown as a perennial, which is recommended, it should overwinter in a temperature of at least 15 degrees. Heat, light, light nutrition and moisture contribute to continuous growth &amp; production of the plant. If you want the plant to produce fruit also during the winter months, use a grow light to supplement the sunlight, possibly grow only under grow light.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> Keep the soil evenly moist and allow it to dry out slightly between waterings. It originates from southern Asia and is known for its distinct and colorful flowers. The tree has received its name from the resemblance between its flowers and orchid flowers. <meta charset="utf-8">The flowers of the orchid tree are very fragrant – they have a honeysuckle-like scent. These seeds come from the 'Candida' variety with white flowers.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">Leaves and flower buds are edible. In India, the unopened flower buds, called Kachnar there, are used both to prepare curries and to make various pickles. This can be compared to how we here in Europe use the unopened flower buds from the <span style="color: #4e991d;"><strong><a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/kapris-capparis-spinosa" title="Capers (Capparis spinosa)" style="color: #4e991d;" target="_blank">caper plant</a></strong></span> to make pickles and consume.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">Oil can be extracted from the seeds of the orchid tree.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">There are also some medicinal uses for the plant. It is mainly the sap from the bark that is used.</span></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">The tree thrives best in subtropical and tropical climates but can also manage in sheltered and sunny spots in temperate climates. However, it tolerates frost and temperatures as low as -7 degrees Celsius. If the tree is placed in a favorably sunny and wind-sheltered spot, it is theoretically possible to succeed with outdoor cultivation year-round in the most favorable parts of Sweden – including Skåne, Öland & Gotland. The indicated USDA zone for the tree is zone 8, which corresponds to the most favorable locations in Sweden’s zone 1. However, they both belong to the same family. It ripens late in the year, which is why it is also called Winter melon.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8">A waxy coating forms on the fruit when ripe; before that, it is covered with fine hairs. This waxy coating gives the fruit very good durability, allowing it to be stored outdoors at temperatures between 2-20ºC for a whole year without spoiling.</p> <p>For the above reasons <meta charset="utf-8">this type of pumpkin is favored, among others, in simpler mountain communities that lack technology such as refrigerators. They can easily leave the harvested fruits outside for a whole year without losing their durability.</p> <p>The flesh is white and crisp with a slightly sweet taste. Wax gourd is eaten as a vegetable like pumpkin and squash: often in stews, soups, and purees. The fruit is sought after in stews because it does not easily break down when cooked. <meta charset="utf-8">The fruit can also be eaten raw.</p> <p>Other uses include candying the fruit and making a kind of sweet tea from it. Both younger and older fruits can be consumed.</p> <p>The plant’s shoots, tendrils, and leaves can also be eaten as vegetables: a tasty way is to stir-fry leaves and shoots in oyster sauce and soy sauce with a little garlic.</p> <p>Seeds can be roasted and eaten.</p> <p>The fruits can grow up to 1.2 meters and weigh from 2 to 50 kg. Usually, harvested pumpkins are seen in lengths around 20-30 cm. The tendrils can grow up to 6 meters long and grow as much as 60 cm per day.</p> <p>Besides its edibility, it also seems to be valued for its beneficial medicinal properties. The shrub is thorny and can grow up to 4 meters depending on the growing site.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">It thrives well outdoors in Sweden and does not have particularly high demands. In terms of soil, it tolerates everything from sandy to heavy clay soils. However, it grows best in leaf mold and compost-mixed soil. Prefers light to half shade. Can also be grown in pots.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">To harvest, cut off one or several of the plant’s underground runners and let the plant continue to grow.
