It is a sturdy and vigorous variety that suits both herb gardens and larger plantings. Lavandin is taller than true lavender and is therefore better suited for use as a low-growing hedge.</p> <p>The flowers are used for drying, lavender sachets, tea blends, herb salt, and natural body care. Lavandin has traditionally been used to create calm, relieve headaches, and support sleep – often in the form of scented sachets or decoctions.</p> <h4>Cultivation</h4> <p>Thrives in sunny, well-drained, and preferably lime-rich locations. 'Grosso' is stronger than common lavender and quickly forms large, dense plants. Excellent as a low hedge or as a solitary plant in larger herb beds. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. The leaves are roasted or dried and used for tea that has a mild stimulating effect. The drink resembles yerba mate but is softer in taste.<meta charset="utf-8"></p> <h4>Cultivation</h4> <p>Yaupon is a hardy plant that tolerates temperatures down to about –18 °C (USDA zones 6–9) and can therefore be grown outdoors in the country's mildest parts, for example in Skåne, on Gotland, and along the west coast. Thrives in sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. Tolerates both drought and wind well once established. <p><strong>Capers plant - current height: 20-40 cm</strong></p> <p><strong>Common name:</strong> Capers<br><strong>Scientific name:</strong> <em>Capparis spinosa</em><br><strong>Family:</strong> Capparaceae</p> <p><strong><span>Plant history & use:</span></strong></p> <p>Capers is a Mediterranean plant long cultivated for its edible unopened flower buds. After picking, they are then pickled in salt to remove bitter substances and enhance the sour taste. You can also let the flowers remain until fruit has formed and instead pickle the slightly larger fruits in the same way.</p> <p>Pickling capers is very simple. It can be divided into 4 steps:<br></p> <ul> <li>Place the fresh flower buds/fruits in a bowl with salt</li> <li>Leave the flower buds/fruits in the bowl with salt for 3-7 days (or longer if desired).</li> <ul> <li>Pour off the water that collects in the bowl and add a little extra salt each day.</li> </ul> <li>When the pickling is finished, rinse off the salt from the flower buds/fruits and soak them in water. The soaking time is up to personal taste, but the shortest recommended time is 15 minutes. You can soak for several hours if you wish. Use a spoon and do a taste test now and then to find the flavor that suits you.</li> </ul> <p>You can also pickle younger shoots and leaves from the caper bush. If you want to use somewhat older leaves and shoots, a tip is to blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes before pickling. Mix your caper harvest with salt and vinegar, leave in the fridge about 1 month. Ready to eat.</p> <p>Capers cultivation can be traced back as far as 7000 years ago in today’s Turkey, Jordan, and Syria. It is believed to have been used both for culinary and medicinal needs. In medicinal use, all parts of the plant were used, mainly as a digestive aid.</p> <p>In tropical and subtropical forest gardens (agroforestry), it is effectively used in the lowest layer as ground cover.</p> <p><strong>Cultivation</strong>:</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8">In Sweden, capers grow best in pots in bright locations and are overwintered frost-free - but... we are experimenting with caper cultivation on a stone wall facing south. The plants are planted in the gaps between the stones, just as it often grows naturally on old castle walls down in the Mediterranean. They do not need much soil to spread out and become nice. The stone wall stores heat when it is warm and releases heat when the temperature drops, creating a somewhat more favorable climate. Capers are hardy down to -8°C, so with some winter covering in the form of jute cloth, this is not impossible in favorable locations in the country’s mildest parts.</p> <p>Capers are characterized by an initially upright growth habit to later grow long horizontal side shoots that spread along the ground or hang down when growing on slopes and on walls.</p> <p>In its original environment, capers often grow in high temperatures and soils with poor water and nutrient availability. A typical adaptation to a nutrient-poor environment is a very widespread root system that makes it suitable as ground cover at, for example, shorelines or eroding soils. Capers in its natural environment is often widespread on rocky cliffs and slopes. It grows on the walls of many ancient fortifications in the Mediterranean.</p> <p>The bush is productive and under optimal conditions can yield substantial harvests of up to 3000 buds per bush and season. In Sweden, one cannot quite expect the same results but can do one’s best to mimic the plant’s original environment by:</p> <ul> <li>letting it stand in direct sunlight all summer,</li> <li>letting it grow in well-drained Mediterranean soil, and</li> <li>letting the soil dry out between waterings.</li> </ul> <p>Feel free to use a large pot when the plant has grown.</p> <p>As described earlier, you harvest either the unopened flower buds or the fully formed fruits. If you let the flower bud open, the bush produces sweet-smelling, spectacular flowers. But above all, it is a very effective accumulator of nutrients, i.e. a good soil improver. Comfrey grows quickly and its roots are deep, which gives the plant access to nutrients from deeper soil layers that are otherwise inaccessible to most plants. It is mainly minerals such as potassium and calcium that are stored in the leaves, but also magnesium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, etc.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">The leaves of comfrey can be cut down throughout the year and used as mulch, or mixed into the soil to make the nutrients available to other plants. Comfrey leaves are good as fertilizer for fruit trees and berry bushes thanks to their potassium and phosphorus content.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> Comfrey has a long growing season, from early winter to late autumn.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> If the leaves are not cut down before winter, they will wither and provide nutrients to the soil they grow in. New leaves will start to grow on the plant immediately after the snow melts.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> You can also make your own comfrey fertilizer by filling a container with the leaves and then filling it to the brim with water. Let it sit for a couple of days and then mix the fertilizer water with 10 parts water to water the plants.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Effective as an edging plant around manure piles to prevent nutrient leakage, but also as an edging plant around crops and other places where you don't want rotograss to spread. Comfrey's dense root system acts like an underground wall, making it difficult for other roots to get through.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> Comfrey creates an attractive environment for other plants in the garden - whether it's to attract pollinators or to act as a natural fertilizer.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> <strong data-mce-fragment="1">Culture:</strong></p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> Comfrey is a herbaceous perennial, meaning it continues to grow in the area even after the leaves have withered during the winter.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"> It is an extremely easy-care plant and is tolerant of site selection. The variety was developed by Cornell University in NY to be hardy and above all<meta charset="utf-8"> adaptable to different environments. The seeds are surrounded by juicy fruit flesh that is sweet in taste – it is said to resemble the flesh of the dragon fruit. In Japan, it is mainly eaten as a seasonal delicacy. The fruit is sometimes eaten together with lemon to enhance the flavor.</span></p> <p><span>The pod’s skin is used in cooking where it is, among other things, filled with minced meat and then fried.</span></p> <p><span>The seeds are bitter and should not be chewed, but can be swallowed whole or simply spat out to avoid the bitter taste.</span></p> <p><span>The fruits can be made into jam, jelly, juice or smoothies, and even ice cream can be made from the fruit flesh.</span></p> <p><span>Young shoots can be added to salads. The flowers are visually clearly divided into male and female flowers.</span></p> <p>There have been <a title="Bioconverted Fruit Extract of Akebia Quinata Exhibits Anti-Obesity Effects in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Rats" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9656223/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #4e991d;"><strong>studies</strong></span></a> showing that consumption of <em>Akebia quinata</em> reduces fat accumulation in the body and lowers cholesterol levels in the blood, and thus can be effective in combating obesity. This is a relatively new finding (2022) and theories that this fruit may become more well-known in the near future have been expressed.</p> <p>The same study has also shown that <em>A. quinata</em> appears cleansing for the liver, kidneys and the heart & blood vessel system. Regular consumption could lead to improved health. <em>A. quinata</em> is diuretic.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8"><meta charset="utf-8">When consuming the plant, it is also said to inhibit bacterial and fungal infections. The roots act as a fever reducer.</p> <p><span>In traditional Chinese medicine, akebia is used to treat urinary tract infections, insufficient milk production and rheumatoid arthritis.</span></p> <p><span>The vines are also used for weaving baskets.</span></p> <p><span>Oil is extracted from the seeds which is used in traditional Chinese soap making.</span></p> <p><strong>Cultivation</strong><span>:</span><br><span></span></p> <p><span>Prefers a sunny spot, although it is hardy in shady locations. Prefers somewhat sandy soils with good drainage and good moisture retention. A humus-rich, light sandy soil is best – like potting soil mixed with sand. It produces sweet, yellow-green grapes with thin skin – excellent to eat fresh straight from the vine or to use for raisins, juice, and jam. The variety grows quickly, yields early harvests, and has good resistance to diseases. ’Himrod’ does not require a pollination partner and gives good harvest even as a single plant. Traditionally, grapes have also been used to support digestion and energy intake.</p> <h4>Cultivation</h4> <p>Thrives best in sunny, warm, and sheltered locations – preferably against a south-facing wall or in a greenhouse. Plant in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with good humus content. Prune annually to ensure good harvest and lasting shape. The vine needs a trellis or support to climb on. The wasabi root (rhizome) is well known in grated form for Sushi, but can also be used to flavor ice cream and sweets.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">If you want genuine wasabi in Sweden, it is best to grow it yourself. The ready-made wasabi paste you buy is often instead a mix of horseradish, mustard, and green coloring agents.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">It is not only the rhizome that can be used, but also the leaves, which go well with shellfish, fish, and salads. The whole plant is edible.</p> <h4 data-mce-fragment="1"><strong>Cultivation:</strong></h4> <p data-mce-fragment="1">The wasabi plant is a perennial and withstands temperatures down to -10°C, so it can survive the winter in Sweden. Plants can be winter-covered with straw, dry leaves, spruce twigs, or similar to keep a higher temperature close to the plant as extra protection.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Wasabi thrives best by running water, so if you have a stream, river, or even a pond available, it provides good conditions for successful establishment. But it is also possible to grow it in fields; just make sure to keep the soil well-drained and moist.
