Indian Ginseng / Ashwagandha: current height 20–40 cm
Common name: Indian Ginseng, Ashwagandha
Scientific name: Withania somnifera
Family: Nightshade family
Plant history & use
Ashwagandha has been used for over 3,000 years in the Indian healing tradition and is sometimes called Indian Ginseng due to its strengthening and calming properties. The roots are the most valued part and are traditionally used as powder or decoction to support recovery, strengthen the nervous system, and balance energy. The young leaves are also edible and can be used in tea or mild herbal brews.
Cultivation
Thrives in sunny and warm locations with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Preferably plant in a pot or raised bed to avoid winter dampness. Ashwagandha is a perennial herb but in Sweden needs to be brought indoors and overwintered frost-free – the plant only tolerates short periods of light frost (down to about –5 °C) and is safest to overwinter in a cool and bright indoor place. Harvest roots in autumn when the plant has withered down.
