Lemongrass: current height 30–50 cm
Common name: Lemongrass
Scientific name: Cymbopogon citratus
Family: Poaceae
Plant history & use
Lemongrass is a classic kitchen herb long cultivated in Southeast Asia, where it is an important ingredient in Thai, Vietnamese, and Indian cooking. The aromatic stalks and leaves give a fresh citrus flavor to soups, curry dishes, marinades, tea, and cold drinks. The oil from lemongrass is also traditionally used as a flavoring and in folk medicine for its refreshing and calming effects.
Cultivation
Lemongrass thrives in sunny, warm, and sheltered locations with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. It is usually grown in pots or greenhouses in Sweden but can be placed outdoors in a protected spot during the summer months. For best winter survival, the pot should be brought indoors before frost and placed in a bright, cool spot (about 5–10 °C). Regular watering and feeding during the growing season promote strong stalks with intense flavor.
In USDA zone 8b, the winter is mild – stalks wither but return in spring. The most favorable locations in our country are classified as USDA zone 8.
As we always do when introducing something new, we will test keeping some lemongrass plants outdoors in a greenhouse and directly in the ground with winter covering during the winter of 2025-2026 – we will provide feedback.
