An important new book from PFAF. It focuses on the attributes of plants suitable for food forests, what each can contribute to a food forest ecosystem, including carbon sequestration, and the kinds of foods they yield. The book suggests that community and small-scale food forests can provide a real alternative to intensive industrialized agriculture, and help to combat the many inter-related environmental crises that threaten the very future of life on Earth.

A food forest is a form of regenerative farming, a designed ecosystem modeled on nature, with the aim of growing food and sequestering carbon at the same time. As a forest it will consist of plants which occupy different layers, typically a canopy layer, shrub layer, herb layer and climbers. All plants will be perennials in order for the soil to be wild, undisturbed and regenerating. All plants will be food producing, will sequester carbon in their woody parts or in the soil, and will have useful functions in the forest ecosystem.

The choice of what to grow in a food forest is challenging. It is not simply a matter of deciding what would be good to eat, and planting the corresponding food plants in beds alongside rows or patches of woodland. Most books about food forests, woodland gardening or carbon farming concentrate on the design principles involved. The focus of this book is the plants, their characteristics and personalities, what they have to offer a food forest ecosystem, as well as what kinds of foods they yield.

We have selected over 500 plants that provide a mix of different growing conditions, plant size and structure, type of food, and contribution to a food forest ecosystem. There is also a quick-reference table of the key characteristics. The featured plants are arranged in sections corresponding to Forest Layer: Shrubs, Groundcover Shrubs, Trees, Herbaceous Plants, Herbaceous Groundcover Plants, Running Bamboos, Bulbs, Climbers.

Plants for your Food Forest is a compact and easy-to-use guide to choosing plants to meet your own objectives, to fulfill your own food forest design. Buying this book also provides PFAF with revenue to support our on-going efforts to make our plants database available free of charge and to continue to extend and improve the information it contains.

Facts

Format

Stapled

Publisher

Createspace Independent Publishing Platform

Published

2021-06-15

Number of pages

95

Language

English

ISBN

 979-8520865087

Dimensions

 210 x 11 x 279 mm

Weight

327g

The flowers then turn into small olive-green, scale-like leaves.

The tamarisk is known for its ability to absorb and concentrate salts in its plant parts. This is useful where there is an outlet for greywater. Greywater is the water that comes out when we purify used water from our kitchens and bathrooms - for example dishwashers, washing machines, showers, etc. When this water is purified, various salts often remain and follow out in the drainage. It is in these outlets that plants like the tamarisk are planted, which appears to be one of the most effective plants at absorbing salt from the soil it grows in. The inability to absorb excess salts in the soil can cause problems for surrounding plants, as it affects their natural water uptake ability through osmosis.

You can also grow the tamarisk as a shrub. If you do not shape it as a tree by pruning, it usually attains the structure of a shrub on its own.

Well suited to grow in mixed hedges as it creates a striking impression with its bright, pale pink shades that lift the whole hedge.

The branches are used for weaving baskets.

Active in attracting pollinators.

Cultivation:

Thrives best in open, sunny locations in well-drained soil. Like the green variety, the fruits of red okra are a well-used ingredient in cooking thanks to their crunchy texture and binding properties. The fruits can be used in the same way as the greens, both in stews and soups, but also raw as a snack. The leaves of red okra can also be used raw in salads or stir-fries.

The big difference between red and green okra is of course the red color - which makes the variety a popular ornamental plant.

Culture:

Like green okra, red okra is drought tolerant and grows best in well-drained, loamy soil. It thrives best in heat and is sensitive to frost, so cultivation in Sweden is mainly recommended in greenhouses or covered growing beds during the spring.

Red okra is self-pollinating, so a single plant is sufficient to bear fruit. For best results, give the plant continuous irrigation and nutrient supply.

The fruits of red okra should be picked at an early, unripe stage while they are still red and soft. If the fruits become too ripe, they can develop a woody taste.

Sowing:

Soak the seeds in water 24 hours before sowing. Put the seeds in moist soil and cover with 1-2 cm of soil. Keep the seed moist and place in a location with direct sunlight. The seeds germinate faster at temperatures above 25 ºC.

Characteristics:

Age: Perennial
Plant position: Sun
Height: 1-2 m
Germination time: 1-8 weeks
Growing zone: Hardy down to 10 ºC
