Perlite is a natural volcanic rock material that has been heat-treated so that it expands and becomes white and porous, somewhat like small light beads. The material is completely sterile and has a neutral pH level.
In cultivation, perlite is mainly used to:
Improve drainage – mixed into soil or seed soil to reduce the risk of water accumulation and root rot.
Loosen soil structure – makes heavy soils more airy and gives the roots better access to air.
Enhance seed soil – often part of soil mixtures for seed sowing, cutting propagation, and repotting of delicate plants.
Stabilize moisture – perlite can retain a small amount of water near the roots while excess water easily drains away.
Perlite is used in potting soil, growing boxes, greenhouses, and water culture. It is especially suitable for seed sowing and rooting of cuttings because it provides a good balance between air and moisture.
