Plant history & use:
Grown for its edible fruit. The fruit has a delicious, rich flavor when fully ripe - almost to the point of overripeness. Before that, the fruit is very tough and unpalatable - a bit like unripe fruit of the related Kaki ( Diospyrus kaki ), which, however, does not stay tough for quite as long. Interestingly, the fruit can develop this sought-after flavor prematurely if the fruit is exposed to a frost.
The fruit can be dried like dates. When the fruit is dried, the roughness disappears and the flavor develops into something similar to dates.
The fruit is considered to be antipyretic and the seeds are considered to be sedative in Chinese medicine (Chopra. RN, Nayar. SL & Chopra. IC).
The fruit contains approximately 1.9% protein, 0.2% fat, 47.7% carbohydrate, 1% various minerals.
The wood is durable, flexible and resistant to rot. It is used for construction and carpentry.
Culture:
Plant in a sunny, warm and wind-protected location. Thrives well in nutrient-rich, slightly clayey soils. Dislikes wet soils, thrives in well-drained soil.
Plants that have been left outside and gone into hibernation are very hardy. Even on older trees, however, younger new growth in the spring is sensitive to frost. Plant in a place protected from early morning sun if possible. Cover with straw and jute fabric or similar during the first 1-2 winters before it has time to establish itself.
Can grow up to 15 meters tall. Large dark green shiny oblong leaves. Pest resistant.
The fruit ripens in October-November. The color changes from yellow to dark brown, with a slightly translucent quality, as the fruit ripens.
