Common name: Red Bee Balm
Scientific name: Monarda didyma
Family: Lamiaceae
Plant history & use:
Red Bee Balm, despite its name, is not a true mint. It has a flavor reminiscent of bergamot, which likely gave it the name bee balm, after one of the most well-known tea blends Earl Grey, which contains bergamot. The leaves also contain thymol, the active ingredient in many mouthwashes we use today.
Red Bee Balm has long been cultivated as a spice and medicinal plant as well as an ornamental for its intensely red flowers. The leaves have a fresh taste with hints of bergamot and are used for tea, salads, and as a seasoning in dishes. The flowers are edible and can be used for decoration.
Moreover, the plant produces large beautiful red flowers that are eager to attract pollinators.

Thrives in sun to partial shade in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Can spread by runners, cut back in autumn.
