It has a flavor reminiscent of bergamot, which likely gave it the name bee balm, after one of the most well-known tea blends Earl Grey, which contains bergamot. The leaves also contain thymol, the active ingredient in many mouthwashes we use today.
Red Bee Balm has long been cultivated as a spice and medicinal plant as well as an ornamental for its intensely red flowers. The leaves have a fresh taste with hints of bergamot and are used for tea, salads, and as a seasoning in dishes. The flowers are edible and can be used for decoration.
