The ready-made wasabi paste you buy is often instead a mix of horseradish, mustard, and green coloring agents.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">It is not only the rhizome that can be used, but also the leaves, which go well with shellfish, fish, and salads. The whole plant is edible.</p> <h4 data-mce-fragment="1"><strong>Cultivation:</strong></h4> <p data-mce-fragment="1">The wasabi plant is a perennial and withstands temperatures down to -10°C, so it can survive the winter in Sweden. Plants can be winter-covered with straw, dry leaves, spruce twigs, or similar to keep a higher temperature close to the plant as extra protection.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1">Wasabi thrives best by running water, so if you have a stream, river, or even a pond available, it provides good conditions for successful establishment. The young leaves are also edible and can be used in tea or mild herbal brews.</p> <h4>Cultivation</h4> <p>Thrives in sunny and warm locations with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Preferably plant in a pot or raised bed to avoid winter dampness. Ashwagandha is a perennial herb but in Sweden needs to be brought indoors and overwintered frost-free – the plant only tolerates short periods of light frost (down to about –5 °C) and is safest to overwinter in a cool and bright indoor place. The oil from lemongrass is also traditionally used as a flavoring and in folk medicine for its refreshing and calming effects.</p> <h4>Cultivation</h4> <p>Lemongrass thrives in sunny, warm, and sheltered locations with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. It is usually grown in pots or greenhouses in Sweden but can be placed outdoors in a protected spot during the summer months. For best winter survival, the pot should be brought indoors before frost and placed in a bright, cool spot (about 5–10 °C). It has long been used to ease, among other things, stress and anxiety. It is also commonly used against skin ailments such as eczema, wounds, and acne as it improves the skin’s elasticity. Gotu Kola is an adaptogen and, like <span> </span><a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/collections/froavdelning/products/ashwagandha-indisk-ginseng-withania-somnifera" title="Ashwagandha seeds" target="_blank"><strong><span style="color: #4e991d;">Ashwagandha<span> </span></span></strong></a>, it is one of the few plants with a very broad range of uses in traditional medicine. There are many scientific articles to read for those interested in learning more in depth.</p> <p>For purely medicinal purposes, extracts are made from the plant. But one can also make use of its health-promoting properties in food and drink.</p> <p>For example, in Burma, a salad is often made with “Pennywort” as the base together with tomato, onion & peanuts, etc. They also brew tea from the leaves or make a cooling drink by pressing the fresh leaves.</p> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">There are two different varieties of Gotu Kola:</span> <br></p> <p>One of them has whole, round leaves and is better suited to grow directly in water – but it also grows well in soil. This type spreads horizontally with the help of underground (/underwater) rhizomes that are somewhat thicker than the leaf stalk itself.</p> <p>The other variety has a small gap in its leaf shape right where the leaf stalk meets the leaf – this variety spreads with the help of long, narrow above-ground runners like strawberries. Judging by its similar growth habit, it is not hard to understand that Gotu Kola is also a good ground cover.</p> <p>Both varieties contain the same active substances, but it is the latter mentioned variety that is most often used in the production of dietary supplements, etc. As seen in the pictures, our plants belong to the latter mentioned variety.</p> <p><strong>Cultivation:</strong></p> <p>In its natural environment, Gotu Kola is often found growing in <span>water</span>, in moist soils as well as by roadsides and hedgerows.</p> <p>It is an easy-to-grow and hardy plant that thrives best in moisture-retentive soil in partly shaded locations. An advantage is to let it grow in a loose soil with much organic material as it requires moisture-retaining properties while excess water easily drains off/down into a saucer.
