For centuries it was used almost exclusively by the people in a mountainous region in southern China where the herb grows wild. <meta charset="utf-8">Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as we know it today originated in the central part of the country, <meta charset="utf-8">far from this region. For this reason, Jiaogulan is not included in the standardized listings of medicines in TCM and is therefore not used as widely as other Chinese medicinal herbs. <meta charset="utf-8">In the 1970s, China conducted a thorough census. It was then discovered that the inhabitants of certain regions, mainly Guizhou province, lived longer than average—often more than 100 years. It turned out that the oldest residents had regularly drunk Jiaogulan tea throughout their lives. Partly from this event comes the nickname "the herb of immortality," but also from numerous scientific studies conducted on the mysterious herb. Modern recognition of Jiaogulan outside China stems from research into sugar substitutes. When examining the sweetening substance in Jiaogulan, saponins were found that are identical to the saponins found in <a href="https://tradgardsdags.nu/products/koreansk-ginseng-panax-ginseng" title="Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)" style="color: #4e991d;" target="_blank">Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)</a>. Further research discovered several additional saponins which were comparable or identical to those found in P. ginseng. The saponins in P. ginseng are called ginsenosides while those found in Jiaogulan are called gypenosides. Compared to Korean Ginseng, Jiaogulan has the advantage of being much easier to cultivate and is ready for harvest much earlier. <meta charset="utf-8">Today Jiaogulan is well used in China and is widely consumed by those interested in its reputed rejuvenating properties. The leaves taste sweet and are used to make tea. They can also be cooked—for example, in a wok. The herb is today used in the treatment of diabetes and a range of other ailments. There is much to read about this herb for the interested. Cultivation: Jiaogulan naturally has a widespread range: it stretches all the way from China to Korea and Japan, down to Southeast Asia and even to New Guinea. It is a plant that thrives in a variety of climates. It is a climbing plant that can reach up to 8 meters high. You can either grow it against something it can twine around, or let it creep along low-growing bushes on the ground. Jiaogulan should be able to grow in most of Sweden’s zones 1-2, roughly tolerating temperatures down to -10°C. It prefers to grow in a humus-rich, well-drained but moisture-retaining soil (typical humus character)—potting soil works well. Place it in a sunny spot. Plant in a pot and overwinter in a greenhouse the first year to give the plant somewhat milder conditions. You can also overwinter it in a storage room, cellar, etc., if there is enough light. If the plant survives the first year with protected overwintering, you can try planting it out in the ground the next spring to give it a chance to overwinter without protection the coming winter. You can always set up wind protection made of fleece and stakes around the plant and cover the base with straw to create milder conditions when growing directly outdoors. Alternatively, move the plant indoors during winter and place it outside during the summer months. If your plant has grown well after the summer, prune and make tea from the leaves to adapt it to its new indoor growing space. With this method, it is possible to grow Jiaogulan throughout Sweden. Thousands of years ago, Carob – as the dried bean pods are called – was used as a counterweight when weighing gold and gemstones. The seeds inside the pod always weighed 0.2 grams, and this is where the measure carat comes from. Carob has also been used as a medicine for coughs and was sold as candy in pharmacies in the past. The pods have a natural sugar content of 30-50%, which is believed to be one of the reasons they were eaten as snacks in the Roman Empire. A well-known use today is as a substitute for cocoa, in roasted and ground form. Unlike cocoa, carob is free from caffeine and theobromine, among other things. Another common use today is the so-called locust bean gum extracted from the seeds. <meta charset="utf-8"> Locust bean gum is a thickening agent used in various foods, including ice cream and crème fraîche. Carob contains many different vitamins, e.g. vitamin A and B2, and has a flavor reminiscent of caramel. The Carob tree fixes nitrogen absorbed from air pores in the soil via nodules on the roots. Since the tree can tolerate temperatures down to about -8 ºC before it is damaged, it is theoretically possible to keep it as an outdoor tree in favorable locations in Sweden. But this is an experiment in itself and is recommended to be tested once the tree has grown somewhat. Otherwise, Carob is drought-tolerant and thrives in well-drained/rocky soil in sunny locations. Avoid moist environments and heavy clay soils. Water when the soil has dried out and add nutrients during the summer months if desired. Repotting into a larger pot is preferably done before the taproot (the thickest main root) has grown down to the bottom. As with all plants, limited space for taproot growth equals a significant decrease in the growth of the entire plant. Carob trees growing in their natural environment around the Mediterranean are high-yielding trees that can produce up to 400 kg of bean pods each year. As described earlier, you harvest either the unopened flower buds or the fully formed fruits. If you let the flower bud open, the bush produces sweet-smelling, spectacular flowers. The caper bush blooms already the first year from seed. <meta charset="utf-8">The flower buds are traditionally picked in the morning as that is when they seem to have their highest aromatic value. The Karen people have lived in the region for over 2000 years and were one of the first inhabitants of the area. Karenchilin is hardier than other tropical chilies. The chilies typically have a high heat and a distinctive fruity and sweet flavor that really makes its mark in the dishes it is used in. <meta charset="utf-8"> Karenchilin is easily recognized by its green, yellow, orange & red fruits with a slightly dented surface. Fruits in different stages are often visible on the plant at the same time a little into the season, hence the colorful impression of the plant. Another characteristic of Karenchilin is that its fruits usually always point upwards on the plant. <meta charset="utf-8"> The Scoville Heat Units (SHU) of the Karen Chili can vary depending on growing conditions, but it typically ranges between 50,000 and 100,000 SHU. This places the Karen Chili at a medium to hot level on the Scoville scale, a level that most other Thai Chili peppers fall into. Culture: <meta charset="utf-8"> Karen Chili can be grown both in pots and in the garden. It needs well-drained soil and a sunny location to thrive. It thrives in a warm and humid environment - both during germination and growth. Under optimal conditions, it is a high-yielding variety that can produce an abundance of fruit during the summer months. However, it is one of the hardier tropical chili varieties in its ability to grow and produce in colder temperatures. It is not frost hardy. So it is grown as a perennial, which is recommended, it should overwinter in a temperature of at least 15 degrees. Can also be grown as an annual. <meta charset="utf-8"> The growth habit is bushy and plants usually reach a height of 60 cm. <meta charset="utf-8"> All chili peppers originate from Central and South America. The genus has since been spread around the world by colonists, missionaries and traders, and new species have emerged through adaptation to the environment. Chili peppers are generally easy to grow. They thrive in sunny, warm locations. They can be grown indoors in windows. All chili peppers are perennial and can produce fruit all year round if given the right conditions. Heat, light, light nutrition and moisture contribute to continuous growth & production of the plant. If you want the plant to produce fruit also during the winter months, use a grow light to supplement the sunlight, possibly grow only under grow light. Keep the soil evenly moist and allow it to dry out slightly between waterings. Fertilize 2-3 times a week to ensure abundant fruit production. The fruits range in color from green (yellow-orange) to red. The fruits can be eaten at all stages of maturity. 2-6 cm. Sowing: Pre-grow indoors at the beginning of the year. Place the seeds in lukewarm water 1 day before sowing. Moisten the soil and press the seeds lightly against the surface. Cover with 1 cm of soil. Place in bright light and keep the seeds moist. In spring, it produces numerous bright white flowers that brighten shaded areas in the garden. At the end of summer, the tree bears peculiar pink-red edible fruits about 2-3 cm in diameter. These fruits can be made into jam or baked into pies. In Asia, juice is made from them and they are fermented into wine. The bark on thicker trunks flakes off and creates a beautiful pattern of varied colours. The leaves of the tree also turn a beautiful bright red/orange colour in autumn. Cultivation: Flowering Dogwood is a deciduous tree that thrives well in most parts of Sweden. The tree is relatively long-lived (50-150 years) and hardy against cold climates. Unlike many plants, Flowering Dogwood thrives well in shady locations. It also prefers to be sheltered from wind. When the tree stands in direct sun, it tends to produce more fruits, but of smaller size. An optimal growing place for the Flowering Dogwood is under one or several taller deciduous trees – which provide shade and add organic material to the soil – surrounded by additional vegetation in various layers. This contributes to the moist, wind-sheltered, and partly shaded environment in which the Flowering Dogwood grows best. The tree’s brightly shining blossoms can also brighten an otherwise shady "grove". Flowering Dogwood has low care demands and yields large recurring harvests every year. For the above reasons, Flowering Dogwood is an excellent tree to have in a food forest. If you do not have such a place on your growing area, a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade also works well. All seed varieties in the shop contribute to a practical addition to the cultivation. Our seeds consist of open-pollinated as well as hand-pollinated varieties; we believe that genetic diversity in the garden contributes to a healthier ecosystem that extends beyond the borders of our crops.

After our own search for good garden shoes, we found the brand Rouchette, where we especially came to love their ankle boots made of natural rubber & insulated with neoprene for the comfort they provide.

The shoes are also designed with a practical outer sole that prevents soil from sticking and being brought into the home - the Frotte&Go system. This technique has been exclusively developed by Rouchette. Rouchette originally is a family business from France but thanks to their comfortable and practical shoes has spread to both South America and countries like South Korea in the east.

The shoes are made in Portugal and France.

It is no exaggeration to say these are the most comfortable and practical boots we have had - and our customers usually agree. You can feel it immediately when you put your foot in the shoe.
