Plant history & use
Black chokeberry is a hardy and easy-to-grow berry shrub originating from North America. The 'Hugin' variety is Swedish, with a compact growth habit and good hardiness, developed to perform well both in gardens and public plantings.
The shiny black berries ripen at the end of summer and can be used for juice, jam, jelly, wine, or drying. The berries are rich in antioxidants, especially anthocyanins, and have a high content of vitamin C. The taste is tart and astringent when raw but develops nicely when cooked. In folk medicine, chokeberries have been used as a strengthening plant for the heart and blood vessels.
Cultivation
Thrives in sun to partial shade and tolerates most soils, including moist or slightly acidic ground. Suitable as a berry shrub, free-growing hedge, or part of edible gardens. The 'Hugin' variety is low and broad-growing with beautiful autumn colors and abundant flowering in spring. Rarely needs pruning except to rejuvenate older branches.
