History & use
'Bornholm' is a Danish fig variety that has been cultivated on Bornholm since the 1930s, where the mild island climate allows this hardy variety to thrive outdoors. It has become popular in Sweden due to its hardiness and ability to yield fruit even in colder locations. The fruits are medium-sized with light brown skin and sweet, light pink flesh. Eaten fresh, dried, or used in cooking.
Cultivation
Thrives in sunny, sheltered spots – preferably against a south-facing wall or in a cold greenhouse. This variety is one of the most frost-hardy figs and can withstand short periods of frost, especially when established. Plant in well-drained soil and protect with leaves or covering fabric during winter in colder parts of the country. Prune sparingly to maintain shape and encourage fruiting.
