Plant history & use
Black bamboo is a graceful bamboo native to China, cultivated for centuries for its dark, almost black stalks that darken with age. The shoots are edible and used in Asian cooking – young shoots are harvested in spring and prepared boiled, fried, or pickled. The bamboo wood is also used in crafts and garden design for its shape and strength.
The emerging youngest shoots are harvested and peeled. Usually sliced and blanched or added to various stews.
Cultivation
Thrives in sun to partial shade in nutrient-rich, well-drained but moisture-retentive soil. Can spread by underground runners – plant with root barrier if spread is to be controlled. Hardy to about –18 °C.
