Cranberry Roselle / Blood Hibiscus in Various Sizes

Height:

60–90 cm

100-130 cm

Common names: Cranberry Roselle, Blood Hibiscus, Cranberry Hibiscus, red-leaved hibiscus, African rosemallow
Scientific name: Hibiscus acetosella
Family: Mallow family

Plant history & use

Cranberry Roselle is a close relative to the better-known roselle Hibiscus sabdariffa, but with better cold tolerance and unique dark red foliage that makes it as beautiful as it is useful. It is grown both as an ornamental plant and for its edible parts – both fruit and leaves have a long tradition in food and drink.

The leaves have a fresh, tart taste reminiscent of cranberries and can be used fresh in salads, as a flavorful splash of color in stir-fries, or lightly cooked like spinach.

The fruits are used in the same way as those of H. sabdariffa to make a delicious cooling juice, but also for jelly and marmalade. They are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C and give an intense color to drinks and desserts.

How to make juice from roselle fruits

Harvest the fruits when they are red and plump. Boil them in a pot with water and add sugar or a natural sweetener, e.g., leaves from 'Sweetleaf'. Let simmer for a few minutes. Strain the juice from the fruits and add freshly squeezed lemon until the desired taste is reached. Chill and serve with ice.

Hardiness & cultivation trials in Sweden

Unlike H. sabdariffa, which is completely frost-sensitive, H. acetosella is right on the edge of being able to be grown outdoors in the country's mildest parts. It belongs to USDA zone 8. Here in Marieholm (zone 1) we have previously succeeded in overwintering other zone 8 plants outdoors, so it is not impossible that Cranberry Roselle can survive in a sheltered spot. We will test this for the first time during the winter of 2025. For those who want to be on the safe side, the plant can be overwintered indoors in a bright and cool space, or in an unheated greenhouse where it is protected from frost. It can also be brought indoors in a pot before winter.

Cultivation

Plant in a sunny to partly shaded location in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Regular watering and feeding give strong growth and abundant harvest of leaves and seed pods. To maximize the harvest, start picking leaves early in the summer and let seed pods develop in late summer and autumn. Does not tolerate standing wetness during winter.

Characteristics

Perenniality: Perennial
Growing site: Sun to partial shade
Height: 1–1.5 meters
Growing zone: USDA zone 8 (possibly Sweden’s zone 1 in sheltered location)
Use: Edible leaves, fruits for tea and drink, ornamental plant

3 root cuttings of different lengths and thicknesses, 3+ cm - taken from a perennial mother plant of the variety 'Bocking 14'

Root cuttings from comfrey establish themselves with ease.

Place the root cuttings in soil and cover with a 1-2 cm thick layer of soil. Suitable for planting both in pots and in open ground. Make sure to keep the soil moist. It is best to keep the root cuttings in partial shade until they have sprouted their first shoots; after that, you can move the comfrey to its final growing place, which has no special demands. It can take up to 2 months for root cuttings to produce their first shoots, but usually they appear already after 2-3 weeks. If you raise your plants indoors or in a greenhouse, it will be faster.

'Bocking 14' is a sterile variety, which means it does not have the ability to produce and spread by seed. It is mainly minerals such as potassium and calcium that are stored in the leaves, but also magnesium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, and others.

The leaves of comfrey can be cut down during the year and used as mulch, or alternatively dug into the soil, to make the nutrients available to other plants. Comfrey leaves are well suited as fertilizer for fruit trees and berry bushes thanks to their content of potassium and phosphorus.

Comfrey has a long growing season, from early winter to late autumn.

If the leaves are not cut down before winter, they wither and similarly provide a nutrient boost to the soil they grow on. However, they both belong to the same family. It ripens late in the year, which is why it is also called Winter melon.

A waxy coating forms on the fruit when ripe; before that, it is covered with fine hairs. This waxy coating gives the fruit very good durability, allowing it to be stored outdoors at temperatures between 2-20ºC for a whole year without spoiling.

For the above reasons this type of pumpkin is favored, among others, in simpler mountain communities that lack technology such as refrigerators. They can easily leave the harvested fruits outside for a whole year without losing their durability.

The flesh is white and crisp with a slightly sweet taste. Wax gourd is eaten as a vegetable like pumpkin and squash: often in stews, soups, and purees. The fruit is sought after in stews because it does not easily break down when cooked. The fruit can also be eaten raw.

Other uses include candying the fruit and making a kind of sweet tea from it. Both younger and older fruits can be consumed.

The plant’s shoots, tendrils, and leaves can also be eaten as vegetables: a tasty way is to stir-fry leaves and shoots in oyster sauce and soy sauce with a little garlic.

Seeds can be roasted and eaten.

The fruits can grow up to 1.2 meters and weigh from 2 to 50 kg. This results in higher temperatures at night and less risk of frost, giving you bigger harvests and a longer season.

Anti-condensation (aD)

Condensation inside a greenhouse not only significantly lowers the temperature, it can also damage the plants. On GjordNära EVA 5, the inner layer is anti-condensation treated, and instead of droplets, a uniform layer of water forms on the inside, which then runs off along the film. Fewer droplets also means more light!

Unmatched strength and durability (EVA)

Thanks to being made of three layers, GjordNära EVA 5 has unique properties regarding toughness, strength, and durability. Its stretchability guarantees a neat result when the film is stretched over your tunnel greenhouse or homemade greenhouse.

Longer lifespan! - 5 years (UV)

GjordNära EVA 5 is UV resistant for at least 5 years. This strong UV protection means your film will stay fresh longer. The 5-year warranty covers UV wear. However, we do not guarantee against mechanical wear/abrasion. We recommend careful taping of all construction parts that touch the film to avoid chafing.

Better transparency

The flat smooth surface keeps the film clean. A clean film lets through more light. The light is refracted and diffused, and this better distribution reduces the risk of burns on the plants in the greenhouse.

Measure and calculate consumption

If you want to replace greenhouse plastic on a frame, you need to know how much is needed.

The width of the plastic is the hoop length + 100cm.

Length = greenhouse length + 50cm

You also need plastic for the gables.
