Vermiculite is a natural mineral (a type of mica) that has been heat-treated so that it expands into light, golden flakes with a high water-retaining capacity. Vermiculite is sterile, pH-neutral, and completely free of nutrients, but serves as an excellent soil conditioner thanks to its physical properties.
In cultivation, vermiculite is mainly used to:
Retain moisture in the soil – vermiculite binds water and releases moisture slowly, which helps plants have a steady supply of water.
Improve soil structure – makes the soil mixture airier and lighter, while holding moisture better than perlite.
Protect seeds during sowing – a thin layer of vermiculite over seedbeds provides even moisture and prevents the soil surface from drying out.
Enhance root growth during cutting propagation – provides a stable and moist environment for roots to develop in.
Vermiculite is often used in seed sowing, cutting soil, and potting soil to create an optimal environment for germination and root growth. It is especially useful in combination with perlite when aiming to achieve a good balance between air and moisture in the soil.
