Plant history & use
Outdoor fuchsia 'Gracilis' is an old-fashioned and proven variety that has long been grown in Swedish gardens – often in sheltered spots where it returns year after year. It blooms abundantly from early summer to late autumn with slender, red-pink flowers hanging like small lanterns along the branches.
The small berries that sometimes follow the flowering are edible and have a mild, tart taste. Fuchsias have also been traditionally used in their native lands, among other things in simple herbal preparations for digestion. But above all, it is grown for its beauty.
Very hardy against wind and salt, making it well suited as a protective hedge in coastal environments.
A natural black dye can be extracted from the wood.
Cultivation
’Gracilis’ thrives in sun to partial shade in nutrient-rich, moist but well-drained soil. It can overwinter outdoors in zones 1–2, even zone 3 in sheltered locations if the roots are covered with leaves, straw, or other mulch. The shoots often freeze back in winter but sprout anew from the base in spring. Prune after winter to stimulate new growth.
