The flowers have a lovely apricot-like scent and are widely used as a flavouring for teas in China. The shrub also produces edible fruits that resemble olives both in shape and preparation method. The shrub is evergreen with dense, fine foliage and is well suited as a privacy hedge in sheltered locations.</p> <p>The scent of apricots often spreads far in the garden when the shrub is in bloom. These flowers are used not only to flavour so-called <em>Osmanthus teas</em>, but also to flavour desserts, baked goods, wines, other alcoholic drinks, and even dishes. An essential oil can also be obtained from the flowers.</p> <p>The fruits resemble olives and, just like olives, are prepared by being placed in brine. Surprisingly similar to pickled olives.</p> <p>Flowers are also added to various modern medicines to mask unpleasant tastes. In traditional medicine, the flowers are used, among other things, as a cough suppressant. It is grown both as an ornamental plant and for its edible parts – both fruit and leaves have a long tradition in food and drink.</p> <p>The leaves have a fresh, tart taste reminiscent of cranberries and can be used fresh in salads, as a flavorful splash of color in stir-fries, or lightly cooked like spinach.</p> <p>The fruits are used in the same way as those of <em>H. sabdariffa</em> to make a delicious cooling juice, but also for jelly and marmalade. Chill and serve with ice.</p> <h4>Hardiness &amp; cultivation trials in Sweden</h4> <p>Unlike <em>H. sabdariffa</em>, which is completely frost-sensitive, <em>H. acetosella</em> is right on the edge of being able to be grown outdoors in the country's mildest parts. It belongs to USDA zone 8. Here in Marieholm (zone 1) we have previously succeeded in overwintering other zone 8 plants outdoors, so it is not impossible that Cranberry Roselle can survive in a sheltered spot. We will test this for the first time during the winter of 2025. For those who want to be on the safe side, the plant can be overwintered indoors in a bright and cool space, or in an unheated greenhouse where it is protected from frost. It can also be brought indoors in a pot before winter.</p> <h4>Cultivation</h4> <p>Plant in a sunny to partly shaded location in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Regular watering and feeding give strong growth and abundant harvest of leaves and seed pods. To maximize the harvest, start picking leaves early in the summer and let seed pods develop in late summer and autumn. <p> Beneficial insects against light thrips, delivered in 10 small bags.</p> <p> <em>Orders placed by Sunday evening will be shipped the following Tuesday.</em></p> <p> Ten small bags of thrips predatory mites,<span> </span><i>Amblyseius cucumeris,</i> which is used as a preventative against thrips or in the event of an incipient infestation.</p> <p> To get a good effect, it is good to hang the bags up early (in greenhouses often June/July) before the thrips infestation becomes too large. It is also important that the environment around the plants is not too dry. Try to maintain a high humidity, especially at the beginning of the growing season when the plants are small.</p> <p> If the mites cannot find thrips, they can also survive on other mites and pollen, for example.</p> <p> Thrip predatory mites are effective against light-colored thrips, but work less well against dark, tropical thrips species that are often seen in tropical houseplants.</p> <p>Note that thrips predatory mites primarily feed on thrips larvae, so adults are not affected. If you have an established thrips infestation, it is better to use orius beetles. Once the infestation is under control, it is beneficial to hang bags of thrips predatory mites to prevent the infestation from returning.</p> <p> Thrips predatory mites can also be used against dwarf and top shoot mites.</p> <p> <strong>Instructions for use</strong></p> <p> The bags are hung on the plants, on side branches or leaf stalks. Over the next 4-6 weeks, thrip predatory mites will emerge from the bag and climb over the plant daily to search for thrips.</p> <p> Please note that the bag already has pre-made holes, so it does not need to be opened further.</p> <p> Avoid the bag coming into contact with the soil and hang it out of direct sunlight.</p> <p> The predatory mites should be released immediately after receipt, but can be stored for a couple of days at 8-10 degrees.</p>
