Like the cherry trees, the Cornelian cherry dogwood also produces interesting, edible berries that can be used in many ways.

The natural range of the Cornelian cherry dogwood stretches from central and southeastern Europe to western Asia around the Caucasus, but it has also been successfully planted in, among other places, Sweden and North America.

The Cornelian cherry dogwood is usually valued for its ornamental qualities early in the year. With its abundant flowering on bare branches in March-April, it is a refreshing sight before much else has sprouted. Because of this, it also serves as a valuable early source of nectar and pollen for pollinators. The flowers are small and yellow and grow in clusters.

From the flowers come

then olive-shaped red berries that are edible. These ripen late in summer or early autumn. The fruit is hard, sour, and astringent before it is ripe but softens as it becomes sweeter. Another sign that the fruit is ripe is to look at the ground – when the fruit starts to fall, it has sweetened. For easier harvest, you can shake the branches and then pick up the berries that fall, since not all ripen at the same time.

The berries, described as tasting like cranberry/sour cherry/plum, can be used to make jelly, jam, juice, fruit wine, and as cocktail berries. The stones can be roasted, ground, and then used as a coffee substitute, and unripe fruits can be pickled and eaten as a substitute for olives. The Cornelian cherry dogwood has long been used in Mediterranean countries and western Asia precisely for its fruits and the medicinal properties they are believed to have. The berries contain a high amount of vitamin C and the antioxidant anthocyanin, which gives the fruit its color.

The Cornelian cherry dogwood is self-pollinating but the harvest can be more abundant if several individuals are planted together.

The hard wood of the Cornelian cherry dogwood was highly valued by the ancient Romans and Greeks for making, among other things, spears and bows.

Cultivation:

The Cornelian cherry dogwood thrives best in full sun to partial shade but also does well in shadier places, though it will produce fewer berries there.

If allowed to grow freely, it becomes a broad and bushy shrub. It is also excellent to train it into a small tree, and the crown can become as wide as the tree is tall. When growing freely, it becomes multi-stemmed, but it is equally possible to keep and train one of the stems. The Cornelian cherry dogwood can also be used as a hedge plant as it responds well to pruning.

It has an upright growth habit, but if the branches grow long, their tips may start to point downward.

The Cornelian cherry dogwood prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and is not picky about pH, although calcareous soil is especially favorable. Often used in cultivation for its effective ability to keep weeds at bay. Berries about 2 cm in diameter ripen from summer to early autumn when they turn a deep red color. Originates from southwestern China.

Creeping bramble is a very attractive groundcover precisely because it is low-growing, effective in its ability to outcompete weeds, and evergreen. This is the main purpose of the plant, but on top of that it also offers edible berries. This plant can become a favorite for those seeking effective and useful groundcovers with the aim of easing weed control, for example in a food forest.

A dense and beautiful dark green foliage that covers the creeping horizontal stems. Blooms white from late spring to summer. The stems are covered with soft glandular hairs, these are not thorns.

Cultivation:

Thrives in partly shaded to shaded locations, but also does well in direct sun. Prefers well-drained clay soils. However, it is hardy in almost all soil types: calcareous, sandy, and acidic soils for example. Hardy to about -15ºC.

Ripe berries turn a deep red color in late summer to early autumn. It is good to harvest regularly to allow the plant to produce new berries.

Spreads via horizontal shoots that then take root. Once established, creeping bramble can spread 2 meters per year. Can be pruned to keep within set boundaries. It is recommended to plant with trees that are already somewhat established, as creeping bramble is very eager to take water and nutrients for its own growth.

Very drought-tolerant once established.

Characteristics:

Longevity: Perennial
Growing conditions: shade-part shade-sun
Height: 10-30 cm (1.5-2.5 m wide)
Hardiness zone: 1-4

The aromatic leaves are used dried in soups, stews, pickles, and broths – and are a staple in many kitchens worldwide. The leaves contain essential oils and have traditionally been used to aid digestion and relieve gas. The plant is evergreen and is well suited for pots. It can also be shaped into small trees or hedges if you want to maintain a more formal style in cultivation.

Cultivation

Bay leaves are hardy to prolonged winter temperatures down to -5ºC and can withstand short drops as low as -15ºC. Some grow bay leaves outdoors year-round in the country’s mildest areas – it is advisable to protect against wind, either with a jute sack or by choosing a sheltered and mild spot in the garden.

In colder parts of the country, it can be grown in a pot that stays outside in summer and is kept frost-free during winter.

Thrives in sunny, warm, and sheltered locations. Plant in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil – preferably in a large pot that can be brought indoors during winter. Prune as needed to harvest leaves and maintain shape.
Biological product against butterfly larvae in vegetable, berry, fruit and ornamental crops. Package of 30 grams.

LARV protection is a biological product that is effective against butterfly larvae in crops of vegetables, berries, fruit and ornamental plants; for example, cabbage moth, cabbage butterfly, vegetable fly, frost butterfly, bird spider moth and fruit peeler.

LAR Vskydd contains the naturally occurring bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis which acts in the larva's digestive tract after the larva has eaten treated leaves and other plant parts. LARVA protection is effective against all types of butterfly larvae.

Butterfly larvae can be identified by a few characteristics:

- All butterfly larvae have a head, biting mouthparts and 3 pairs of thoraxes.

- On the hind body segments they also have short, soft so-called abdominal feet that resemble suction cups. The last pair of abdominal feet are sometimes called anal feet.

- Butterfly larvae usually have five pairs of legs (including the anal feet). Within the family of moths, larvae have only two pairs of legs. In mining butterfly larvae, the legs are usually very small and can sometimes be missing.

- If the caterpillar has 6 or more pairs of legs, it is a plant mite, and must be controlled in other ways, for example with a natural pyrethroid.

Use

When treating, it is important that the entire plant is covered with spray liquid so that the larva easily comes into contact with the product. The best effect is obtained if LARVA protection is used against small larvae. The larvae stop eating after a couple of hours and die after a couple of days. Larvae that are unprotected on the plant are the easiest to treat. Those that spin themselves, crawl into buds or fruits are difficult to treat.

Avoid using LARVA protection in sunlight as the product is broken down by sunlight. Spray in dry weather. Rain and irrigation will wash off the product. At temperatures below 12–15 °C, the effect of LARVA protection is reduced as butterfly larvae become less active. It may take up to 2–5 days after treatment for the larvae to die. The treatment may need to be repeated, with at least 7 days between each treatment.

Lavandin of the 'Grosso' variety: current height 20–30 cm

Common name: Lavandin
Scientific name: Lavandula × intermedia
Family: Lamiaceae

Plant history & use

Lavandin 'Grosso' is one of the most cultivated lavandin varieties in commercial production – especially in France where it is grown extensively for its high content of essential oil and distinct, classic lavender scent. It is a sturdy and vigorous variety that suits both herb gardens and larger plantings. Lavandin is taller than true lavender and is therefore better suited for use as a low-growing hedge.

The flowers are used for drying, lavender sachets, tea blends, herb salt, and natural body care. Lavandin has traditionally been used to create calm, relieve headaches, and support sleep – often in the form of scented sachets or decoctions.

Cultivation

Thrives in sunny, well-drained, and preferably lime-rich locations. 'Grosso' is stronger than common lavender and quickly forms large, dense plants. Excellent as a low hedge or as a solitary plant in larger herb beds. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Tolerates heat and drought well but requires drainage to survive the winter.

Characteristics

Perennial: Perennial
Growing position: Sun
Height: 60–80 cm
Hardiness zone: 1–5 (with good drainage)
Flowering: July–August

The 'Phenomenal' variety is especially known for its hardiness, dense shape, and ability to withstand both moisture and cold better than many other lavender varieties. Lavandin also grows taller than common lavender – making it well suited for a low-growing hedge.

The flowers have a high essential oil content and are used just like common lavender for drying, scent sachets, tea blends, herbal mixtures, and natural skin care. Lavandin is also commercially used for extracting lavender oil, thanks to its rich fragrance.

Cultivation

Thrives in full sun in well-drained, preferably lime-rich soil. Tolerates both heat and drought, but also Swedish winter better than most lavender varieties – provided good drainage. Prune back after flowering to keep the plant compact. Excellent in flower beds, herb gardens, slopes, or as an edging plant.

Characteristics

Perennial: Perennial
Growing position: Sun
Height: 50–70 cm
Hardiness zone: 1–5 (good drainage required)
Flowering: July–August
