Common name: Edible Passionfruit, Passionflower
Scientific name: Passiflora incarnata
Family: Passifloraceae
Plant history & use
'Eia Popeia®' is the first variety in the Cooltropics® series – a new generation of passionfruit that combines exotic fruit and flowering with unusual winter hardiness. The variety blooms abundantly with beautiful blue-violet flowers from June to September. From the flowers develop egg-sized, oval fruits that ripen by autumn and turn yellow when ready to harvest. The pulp has a sweet-tart taste with classic passionfruit character and can be eaten fresh or used in desserts, smoothies, juice, syrup, and jam. The flowers are also edible and decorative.
Cultivation
Plant in a sunny, warm, and sheltered spot in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. 'Eia Popeia®' is hardy down to about –15 °C (USDA zone 6) and can sometimes withstand slightly lower temperatures if well established. Aboveground parts wither during winter, and the plant sends out new, strong shoots from the rootstock at the end of May. It needs support or a trellis to climb on and can quickly become a large and lush feature in the garden. Light winter covering, for example with brushwood or leaves, is recommended for best overwintering. Prune the withered shoots in autumn to about 10 cm.
