<p data-mce-fragment="1"> <meta charset="utf-8"><em><strong>An important new book from PFAF.</strong> It focuses on the <strong>attributes</strong> of <strong>plants</strong> suitable for <strong>food forests,</strong> <strong>what each</strong> can <strong>contribute</strong> to a <strong>food forest ecosystem,</strong> including carbon sequestration, and the kinds of <strong>foods</strong> they <strong>yield.</strong> The book suggests that community and small-scale food forests can provide a real alternative to intensive industrialized agriculture, and help to combat the many inter-related environmental crises that threaten the very future of life on Earth.</em></p> <p><span>A food forest is a form of regenerative farming, a designed ecosystem modeled on nature, with the aim of growing food and sequestering carbon at the same time. As a forest it will consist of plants which occupy different layers, typically a canopy layer, shrub layer, herb layer and climbers. All plants will be perennials in order for the soil to be wild, undisturbed and regenerating. All plants will be food producing, will sequester carbon in their woody parts or in the soil, and will have useful functions in the forest ecosystem.</span></p> <p><span>The choice of what to grow in a food forest is challenging. It is not simply a matter of deciding what would be good to eat, and planting the corresponding food plants in beds alongside rows or patches of woodland. Most books about food forests, woodland gardening or carbon farming concentrate on the design principles involved. The focus of this book is the plants, their characteristics and personalities, what they have to offer a food forest ecosystem, as well as what kinds of foods they yield.</span></p> <p> <span>We have selected over 500 plants that provide a mix of different growing conditions, plant size and structure, type of food, and contribution to a food forest ecosystem. There is also a quick-reference table of the key characteristics. The featured plants are arranged in sections corresponding to Forest Layer: Shrubs, Groundcover Shrubs, Trees, Herbaceous Plants, Herbaceous Groundcover Plants, Running Bamboos, Bulbs, Climbers.</span></p> <p><em>Plants for your Food Forest</em><span> </span>is a compact and easy-to-use guide to choosing plants to meet your own objectives, to fulfill your own food forest design. Buying this book also provides PFAF with revenue to support our on-going efforts to make our plants database available free of charge and to continue to extend and improve the information it contains. </p> <table id="ctl00_ctl00_m_m_ctl02_gv" border="1" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" class="infoTable" rules="all"> <caption> Facts </caption> <tbody> <tr class="infoRow"> <td style="width: 140px;" data-mce-style="width: 140px;"> Format<br> </td> <td style="width: 380px;" data-mce-style="width: 380px;"> Stapled </td> </tr> <tr class="infoAltRow"> <td style="width: 140px;" data-mce-style="width: 140px;"> Publisher</td> <td style="width: 380px;" data-mce-style="width: 380px;"> Createspace Independent Publishing Platform </td> </tr> <tr class="infoRow"> <td style="width: 140px;" data-mce-style="width: 140px;">Published</td> <td style="width: 380px;" data-mce-style="width: 380px;"> 2021-06-15 </td> </tr> <tr class="infoAltRow"> <td style="width: 140px;" data-mce-style="width: 140px;"> Number of pages</td> <td style="width: 380px;" data-mce-style="width: 380px;"> 95 <br> </td> </tr> <tr class="infoRow"> <td style="width: 140px;" data-mce-style="width: 140px;">Language</td> <td style="width: 380px;" data-mce-style="width: 380px;"> English <br> </td> </tr> <tr class="infoAltRow"> <td style="width: 140px;" data-mce-style="width: 140px;"> ISBN <br> </td> <td style="width: 380px;" data-mce-style="width: 380px;"> <meta charset="utf-8"> <span>979-8520865087</span> </td> </tr> <tr class="infoRow"> <td style="width: 140px;" data-mce-style="width: 140px;">Dimensions <br> </td> <td style="width: 380px;" data-mce-style="width: 380px;"> <meta charset="utf-8"> <span data-mce-fragment="1">210 x 11 x 279 mm</span> <meta charset="utf-8"> </td> </tr> <tr class="infoRow"> <td style="width: 140px;" data-mce-style="width: 140px;">Weight</td> <td style="width: 380px;" data-mce-style="width: 380px;"> 327g </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <div id="gtx-trans" style="position: absolute; left: 64px; top: 501.229px;"> <div class="gtx-trans-icon"></div> </div>

<p><strong>Flat peach of the variety 'Ornella': current height 80–100 cm</strong></p> <p>Self-fertile but fruit setting is improved by proximity to other types of peach/nectarine.<br><br><strong>Common names:</strong> Flat peach, Paraguayo, Donut peach, Saturn peach<br><strong>Scientific name:</strong> <em>Prunus persica var. platycarpa</em><br><strong>Family:</strong> Rose family</p> <h4>History & use</h4> <p>Flat peach, also known as paraguayo, is an old form of peach with flat, sweet, and fragrant fruits. The 'Ornella' variety yields abundant harvests of juicy fruits with a fine balance between sweetness and acidity. The fruits are eaten fresh or used in desserts, jam, and baking.</p> <p>The species has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region for centuries and has recently become popular in more northern gardens thanks to its good fruits and decorative flowering.</p> <h4>Cultivation</h4> <p>Thrives in warm, sunny, and sheltered locations in well-drained, preferably lime-rich soil. Can be grown outdoors in the mildest parts of the country (zone 1-2) in a spot protected from cold winter winds or in a larger pot kept frost-free during winter.</p> <p>Water evenly, especially during flowering and fruit setting. The flowers then turn into small olive-green, scale-like leaves. </p> <p>The tamarisk is known for its ability to absorb and concentrate salts in its plant parts. This is useful where there is an outlet for greywater. Greywater is the water that comes out when we purify used water from our kitchens and bathrooms - for example dishwashers, washing machines, showers, etc. When this water is purified, various salts often remain and follow out in the drainage. It is in these outlets that plants like the tamarisk are planted, which appears to be one of the most effective plants at absorbing salt from the soil it grows in. The inability to absorb excess salts in the soil can cause problems for surrounding plants, as it affects their natural water uptake ability through osmosis.</p> <p><meta charset="utf-8">You can also grow the tamarisk as a shrub. If you do not shape it as a tree by pruning, it usually attains the structure of a shrub on its own.</p> <p>Well suited to grow in mixed hedges as it creates a striking impression with its bright, pale pink shades that lift the whole hedge.</p> <p>The branches are used for weaving baskets.</p> <p>Active in attracting pollinators.</p> <p data-mce-fragment="1"><strong data-mce-fragment="1">Cultivation:</strong></p> <p>Thrives best in open, sunny locations in well-drained soil.
